Brandt Snedeker wept yesterday during his post-round press conference. Some have responded with empathy and some with ridicule but none with confusion. As in why does it mean so much? None of my friends (and they are legion) have wondered why he cried and some even feel sorry for Brandt. But why? He just won over $430,000 and his job is to play golf. Sure, he had a bad day and perhaps cost himself a small piece of immortality but we hardly need to feel bad for the guy. Compare Snedeker to yourself. Did you earn $430,000 last week? Are you playing in another professional event this week?
Or take Luke Donald as another example of a professional golfer who has failed to win a major championship and sometimes elicits sympathy. I mention Donald because The Golf Channel showed a behind-the-scenes look at his life last week. His life's pretty good, probably better than yours. He's got a hot girlfriend (well, he's not unique there), he's owns two houses and at least one condominium, he buys original art, he's launching his own wine label and when he wants to go shopping he doesn't just go to Ralph Lauren, they shut down the store just for him. Oh and how did he get there? He drove his 2008 BMW convertible.
Now please don't interpret this little blog of mine to mean that I'm bitter or unhappy - I'm not. Seriously. But why do these players compete with such pressure? Why do they cry, literally cry, when they lose? Why does it all mean so much?
