Why Tim Tebow Won't Go North to Canada or Change Positions
Today we are talking about his proclamations. Despite being released by the New England Patriots, and having most of the world tell him that he is not an NFL quarterback, Tebow is telling the world that he is "an NFL quarterback", and nothing else.
Despite many coaches and experts suggesting that Tim either go to the CFL, or change positions, Tim is obstinate. He will not go, and will not change. He is an "NFL quarterback", come hell or high water, and nothing is going to change that.
Why? Why won't Tim make a change to better his career? There is only one reason that makes ANY sense.
If he makes the change, he can not sell Tim Tebow, the brand. It's the only logical conclusion.
First of all, he clearly enjoys the extra attention. He certainly doesn't shy away from it. He is a backup quarterback, he could have diffused the situation, especially with the Jets, by telling reporters to speak with the starter, but he didn't. He allowed the crazy reporters to perpetuate the circus atmosphere. Why, because he enjoys it.
Keep that in mind, while we think about the Canadian Football League. The football field is wider than the NFL field. It plays right into the style of Tim. A running quarterback has the potential to excel in the CFL. OK, that's a plus to go up there.
Going to the CFL has resurrected careers. Look at Warren Moon as the biggest example. He couldn't find a job. He went North to the CFL, and came back a Hall of Fame player in both leagues. Others have gone to the USFL, such as Jim Kelly and Steve Young. Leaving the NFL to improve does not end your career in the NFL.
So, why not go to the CFL? Because they have no idea who he is in Canada, and Tebow can't stand that.
People that have spent time in Canada have said it. Residents of our neighbors to the north have no idea who Tim Tebow is. Therefore, he would not get the same attention as he does in the states. The reporters will not be around him because he isn't a story. If nobody is interested in listening to him talk, Tim Tebow the preacher goes away. Tim Tebow the brand goes away. And that scares him. He knows his own mystique is what sells him, and he doesn't want to lose that.
Understandable? Sure. But let's not lose focus on the truth. It's not about NFL dreams, it's about selling power.
