Will OJ Mayo Be That Much Better Than A Ben Gordon?
3/21/08

OJ Mayo is incredibly talented, you can't ignore that, but I don't see him being all that much better than a Ben Gordon type.

He'll be incrementally more valuable if he continues to play defense and his height helps in comparison to Gordon, but he's far too inconsistent a shooter to become a top 5 draft pick that he's been hyped.

OJ Gordon, as we'll call him, will win you games at the next level ... go nutso from three-point range and drop 35 points. Next night? 5 points on 3-20 shooting in a loss.

In comparison so another top prospect, if Derrick Rose is having a bad shooting night he'll dish 8 assists and move the ball well for his teammates. That's where I believe Mayo is lacking most.

Mayo has displayed much more maturity this season that I would have expected, but what happens when he cashes his first (or wait, probably not his first) paycheck? I'll take the odds on him going in Marbury's direction and thinking he's much bigger than the team.

OJ's only a slightly better version of Ben Gordon right now. Let's hope he stays at least one more season.

I agree that Mayo would be best served to stay one year, if only for draft positioning.  I think he gets a bum rap for his untraditonal, to say the least, recruitment to USC.  He isn't all that bad of a kid, and is a rather efficient shooter.  I'd take other guys from this freshmen class over him, but if I got him in the 8-13 portion of the lottery I'd consider it a steal.

Edit: Statistically speaking, he's a better bet than Eric Gordon.  He has a better assist to turnover ratio, and shoots better from the 3 point line.  Their overall shooting % is almost the same (both 44%).  Gordon's defense is better, but OJ is taller than Gordon. Personally I like Gordon better, but its hard to argue that he's actually better than Mayo.
