On Monday afternoon, Mets GM Omar Minaya gave his best Lovie Smith impression to reporters, "Willie Randolph is our manager."
“We had a good, productive meeting,” said Minaya, who noted they all share ideas on how best to make the team better, adding, “Two things, ownership is very disappointed in how the team is playing…They wanted to talk to Willie about those things…Also, about the comments, once we get beyond today, like today is over, those comments are over, and they felt it was important to talk to Willie about it, they’ve accepted his apology and we move on from there. It’s over. Let’s go on. It’s over. Let’s move forward now.”That was before the game.
Four hours later New York lost their 6th game in their last 7, getting worked over by the first place Marlins yet again.
I don't think Randolph is a terrible manager, he's clearly worthy of his post, but it's impossible to ignore that there's something toxic in the Mets clubhouse. How else do you explain a group of talented hitters failing to play consistently day in and day out? After this poor start to the season, coupled with last fall's embarrassing collapse, and someone ultimately has to be held accountable.
I'd be stunned if he lasts through the end of June.
20 Runs Should Be Enough Somehow Jamie Moyer was able to still get the win on Memorial Day after his team failed to convert the PAT following the Phillies third touchdown. Chase Utley blasted his 16th home run (tied with Berkman and Uggla for NL-lead) and drove in 6 RBI's. Phillies 20, Rockies 5
Memorialize This After finishing with the worst record in baseball last year, the Tampa Bay Rays now have the best record after Memorial Day. The last time that happened was the same year the Cubs won a World Series. So basically, a really f-ing long time ago. Every Rays starter had a hit Monday. Rays 7, Rangers 3
Webb Caught At 9 Brandon Webb easily reached nine wins. His last two starts have been anything but a breeze. Atlanta roughed him up for 10 hits and four earned runs running his record now to 9-2. Hopefully this gives us some perspective on how difficult it is to reach even the 20 win plateau. Braves 7, DBacks 3
