Jack Wilshere has been hailed as England’s brightest talent for the last couple of years. The young English midfielder is expected to become the captain of the Three Lions in the future. However, Wilshere hasn’t been able to show the potential of becoming a consistent player for England so far.

Injuries and under-par performances have plagued the Arsenal man’s career. Wilshere admits he is “definitely not” sure about whether he will be part of England’s squad for the World Cup next year. The 21-year-old believes he could lose his place to players such as Ravel Morrison.

England coach Roy Hodgson is an avid fan of Wilshere, but even the Three Lions boss cannot turn a blind eye towards the emergence of young midfielders. Morrison, who left Manchester United to get more experience, has been in impressive form with West Ham United this season.

“I'm definitely not nailed on for the squad,” Wilshere said. “You have seen over the last couple of months the talent there is, even in the under-21s. With Ravel Morrison and all these players coming through, you are never guaranteed [to go] and cannot rest on your laurels.

“You are only as good as your last game, they say, so when the time comes, I have to be on top form, and there will be a lot of players looking to be as well.

“There are some big games coming up for the club at the moment, so I am just concentrating on that. That is where you are going to get into the England World Cup squad -- by playing well for your club, then you are going to get picked for your country.”

Wilshere is set to miss Arsenal’s crucial game against Southampton this weekend. The Gunners will host third-placed Saints at the Emirates this Saturday in an attempt to further improve their lead on top of the Premier League table. Wilshere, who picked an ankle injury during England’s battle with Germany at the Wembley, has been labelled out of action by Arsenal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly anguished at Hodgson for playing Wilshere in the 2-0 loss to Chile and 1-0 loss to Germany, despite a request to feature the midfielder in only one game.

Wilshere will undergo a fitness test ahead of the game, but he is expected to be rested for the match. Wilshere’s absence will send Mikel Arteta into a more defensive role in the team. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s attack will strengthened with the return of Theo Walcott.
