On the left, is Gisela Dulko. She's the 45th-ranked women's player in the world. She's a pretty good player, but she's never really been considered one of the elite players in the world. On the right, you see Dinara Safina. She's the #1 seed at Wimbledon, and the top ranked women's player in the world.
So when it comes to choosing who gets to play on Centre Court at Wimbledon, it's a no-brainer, right? Of course it is. Dulko gets to play on Centre Court... because she's better looking.
While that may sound like a preposterous way to do things, the folks at Wimbledon have admitted that much like everywhere else in our superficial world, looks are a factor. They also favor the hometown heroes.
"No one has heard of many of the women now, so if they are pretty it definitely gives them an edge. Our preference would always be a Brit or a babe as this always delivers high viewing figures."
Is it wrong? Perhaps. But then again... can you blame them? It's all about the ratings. And while it might not be our proudest moment as a society, we like people who look good. Like Ana Ivanovic. So sue us.
