There Were Plenty Of Winners, And Plenty Of Losers, At The Games
8/25/08

With the Olympic Games now over, we can take a look back to see who won and who lost as a result of these Games. Fortunately, we had plenty of winners - like Michael Phelps - but we also had plenty of losers. Here's a look at both.

Winners of the Olympic Games

1. Michael Phelps - Won 8 gold medals, is now the greatest Olympian ever, hooked up with Stephanie Rice, may have turned Linsay Lohan straight again, and could reportedly get $100 million in endorsements. I'd say he had a good two weeks.

2. China
- Sure, things weren't perfect, but they answered the bell for the Olympic Games, were clearly prepared for them, and hauled in the most gold medals of any country. Granted half those gold medals were in sports I've never heard of, but whatever. The host nation can be proud of its accomplishments in producing an entertaining Olympic Games.

3. Usain Bolt - The fastest man on earth won three golds and actually made track and field cool again. Plus he wasn't busted for doping...yet.

4. Alicia Sacramone
- She may have cost the US women's gymnastics team the gold, and she didn't medal in her individual event, but so what? The fact that she's hot pretty much solves any of those problems. She was clearly the most popular women's gymnast coming out of these Games.

5. Team USA Basketball - They reclaimed gold and seemed to revive the US's desire to crush all opposition to their basketball superiority. I have a feeling that we'll see a team just as motivated to carry on the honor in 2012.

6. Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh
- They've now won 109 straight matches, back to back gold medals, and are undefeated in their Olympic careers. They've cemented their legacy of being the greatest women's beach volleyball team ever, and they've helped expand the worldwide popularity of the sport. President Bush also likes them.

7. Dogs
- They were off Chinese menus for two weeks thanks to the Games. They won't be winners this week, but hey, a two weeks reprieve is better than nothing.

8. Beach Volleyball
- Who says this sport doesn't belong in the Olympics? This sport rules because we dominate at it and because of the fact that it had scantily clad cheerleaders. Is there any wonder why beach volleyball was by far one of the most popular sport at the Games?

9. NBC - The Games became the most viewed U.S. television event of all time, drawing 211 million viewers over 16 days

Losers of the Olympic Games

1. The IOC - They looked the other way on the Chinese women's gymnastics controversy, they criticized Usain Bolt for helping make track and field fun, they decided to cancel softball and baseball for the 2012 Olympics because they claim the sports dominated by specific countries - yet somehow table tennis is in no danger of being dropped from the Games. The IOC also never took a stand on any of the crap China pulled during the Games, which was inexcusable. I can't remember the last time the IOC looked worse after an Olympics. They were in rare form these Games.

2. Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs
- Yao got pressed into service on a recently repaired foot. I'm sure the Rockets will be thrilled when he's done for the year by game 30 of the regular season. Also, Manu "Flopper" Ginobili injured his ankle and it could require surgery.

3. Ronaldinho
- Anyone else see him on the bronze medal Brazilian soccer team? Dude is seriously fat by soccer player standards. What the hell happened to this guy?

4. Shawn Johnson - She came in as the face of US women's gymnastics, yet lost the women's all-around to teammate Nastia Luikin and only won one gold in an individual event. She likely lost tons in endorsement money.

5. Angel Matos
- He was the Cuban taekwondo guy who delievered a roundhouse kick to a ref's head. He got banned for life, which makes you an automatic loser.

6. NBC
- Their "nothing is live except beach volleyball" schedule annoyed the hell out of me.

7. China
- Yes, they were a winner on one level, but they also were a huge loser as well. Throwing 70-year old women into hard labor camps for wanting to protest their homes getting torn down to make way for Olympic venues will do that. The country also clearly endorsed state-sponsored cheating, as it made sure to fudge the ages of its women's gymnastics team. China also didn't keep a number of promises that it said it would for these Games, like allowing journalists un-filtered internet access. Also the fact that they beat monks to death in Tibet before the Games didn't help either. So while China did a great job of being prepared for the Games, they also made it clear over the course of the Olympics that they had no business hosting them in the first place.
