World Series Game 4 Live Thread: Philadelphia Phillies vs New York Yankees
The Phillies Are Behind Joe Blanton In A Must-Win Against The Yankees Ace [World Series Game 4 Live Thread]
The Yankees took a 2-1 lead last night, thanks to some solid pitching (and even a little hitting) from Andy Pettitte. Tonight, they send their ace to the mound again on 3 days rest to try to gain a 3-1 lead and put the Phillies on the ropes. Sabathia has proven that he can pitch well on 3 days rest before, and he'll likely be his usual dominant self tonight.

The question is whether or not Phillies starter Joe Blanton will be able to keep up. Personally, I think that Charlie Manuel is making a mistake by not starting Cliff Lee. Sure, we don't really know how well he operates on short rest, but this is the World Series. If there's any time to have your ace dig deep and get you a win, it's right now. I trust Cliff Lee on 3 days rest tonight more than I trust Joe Blanton. Also, pitching Cliff Lee on short rest tonight would give them a chance to let him start again in Game 7. I think there's no doubt the Cliff Lee is their best pitcher, and they need to find a way to send him to the hill as many times as possible.

Tonight's game starts at 8:20 pm EST on FOX, and 59% of FanIQ users picked the Yankees to win tonight. If you're watching the game, chat it up here. As always, enjoy the game!

Well, if CC sucks (totally possible), and Philly wins, then suddenly Manuel looks like a genius, because he'll have Lee go in Game 5 to take the lead in the series.

I mean, it's a risk starting CC on three days rest. People keep forgetting that. Sure he was great last year, but does that translate to now? I mean, he sucked on full rest.

Either way, this is a really interesting game.

Carsten Charles looks off tonight.  Not a huge surprise.  You can only put a guy out there on three days rest so many times before he wears down a little bit.

Edit: But he looked really good striking out Howard.

The only time you want to see the words "Joe Blanton" and "must win" in the same sentence is if someone is talking about the team you're getting ready to play.

That being said, I am pulling for him to get us through Game Four!

GO PHILS!!

You cant pin this loss on Joe Blanton.  He did enough to keep his team in the game and give them a chance to come back, which they did.  Unfortunately, the regular season version of Brad Lidge showed up in the 9th and imploded....all with two outs

Blanton wasn't awful, but I think Lee could have been better. Also, not starting him in Game 4 makes him essentially unavailable for a potential Game 7. Still a bad call, IMO.

Joe Blanton will get a win tonight... think of him as the set up man for Cliff Lee. Which would make Cliff Lee da CLOSER :)If Joe  gets into trouble they can always use the bullpen. But its highly unlikely Charlie knows what he is doing

Cliff Lee may have been better but sooner or later, the Phillies were going to have to win a game where Lee didnt start in order to win the World Series.  I dont think you could start Pedro on 3 days rest and Cole Hamels has all but checked out mentally and physically so who knows what you get from him.  Somewhere, the Phillies were going to have to start Joe Blanton in this series to try and steal a game.

You don't necessarily have to keep the rest of the rotation on 3 days rest. They have Happ, Blanton, Pedro and Hamels, all of whom are capable of MAYBE giving them a quality start.

If you pitch Cliff Lee on normal rest, then you have to win at least 2 games without him. On short rest, maybe you only need to win 1. It's the World Series... any time there's a long series, we've seen how much an elite starter or two can make the difference. Cliff Lee needs as many innings as humanly possible. Period.

I agree with Scott, Blanton was going to have to go at some point.  And I think he did about as well as he could have been expected to do.  Actually, I think he surpassed my expectations.

As much as I hate to admit it, the Phillies just aren't playing as well as the Yankees.  Every time the Phillies do something to put the Yankees on the defensive, they come right back and even it up or go ahead.  This is what good teams do - they respond to adversity.  The Phillies aren't responding on the mound (Lidge), on the field (Damon goes from first to third?!?) or at the plate (Ibanez and Howard have been terrible this series).

At some point in time you have to make the plays instead of hoping the other team won't make the plays.  Right now the Yankees are making the plays.  Of course, I hope this changes....

I don't know - I think there are too many variables with this.  I think you MUST  get two quality starts out of Lee and if the best way for this to happen is to let him go in Game 5, then you do that.  You still have to rely on the rest of the team to pick up the slack and they haven't.
