Worst College Bowl Game Names Of All Time
A Look At Some The Most Bizarre Bowl Game Names Of All Time
READ MORE:
Pretty much every year when bowl season starts, you get someone who makes the "when are we going to get the Toilet Bowl?" joke. Even though I hear it ever every year, it's still funny, mainly because it really does seem like a possibility every year.

While the Toilet Bowl isn't here quite yet, the truth is that there have been some pretty bizarre bowl names over the years. And luckily, the sports blog The Legend of Cecilio Guante uncovered some of the weirdest. So let's get to it.

The Bacardi Bowl (pictured above): An ode to the rum of Cuba, this bowl game was played in Havana, Cuba seven times, the first game pitting LSU against Havana University in 1907. The last Bacardi Bowl took place in '46 with Southern Miss taking down Havana in a 55-0 squeaker. In case you didn't notice, football isn't really a big sport in Cuba.

The Glass Bowl: The University of Toledo played this bowl game for 4 years from '46-'49, and used it as an opportunity to beat up small east coast colleges like Bates. By the way, Bates is a D-III school. Stay classy, Toledo.

Refrigerator Bowl: The Fridge Bowl was played annually in Evansville, IN from 1948-1956. Sam Houston Teachers College took down Middle Tennessee State back in '56. Why the Refrigerator Bowl? Evansville, IN was known as the "refrigerator capital of the world" back in those days.

The Salad Bowl: Yes, there was indeed a Salad Bowl, played in the 40s and 50s. It was actually a precursor to the Fiesta Bowl, and no, that's not a joke.

Raisin Bowl: Only lasted for 4 years in the late 40s. It shriveled up and died pretty quickly.

Here are some other defunct bowls with terrible names:
  • Oil Bowl: Naturally, it took place in Texas.
  • Cigar Bowl: Don't think that name would fly today.
  • Boot Hill Bowl: With schools like Buena Vista and Saint Mary of the Plains facing each other, this bowl must have been an annual barn burner.
  • Poi Bowl: Played in Hawaii, was as bad as poi tastes.
  • Haka Bowl: This game was supposed to start in 1996 in Auckland, New Zealand. Then the NCAA woke up and said "what the hell are we doing having a bowl game in New Zealand?"
  • Mirage Bowl: Took place in Japan from '76-'93. Why? Who knows.
  • Vulcan Bowl: A traditionally black college bowl game, this would have been a hit with Star Trek fans.
And here are some of the worst bowl games with jackass title sponsors.
  • Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl
  • MagicJack.com St. Petersburg Bowl
  • MicronPC.com Bowl
  • Papajohns.com Bowl
  • Swingline Stapler Bowl
  • The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl
  • Gaylord Hotels Music Bowl
  • R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Like I said, it's only a matter of time before the Toilet Bowl becomes a reality.

How about the Drunken Transvestite Bowl? Last played New's Year Day 1951 when Coke University downed Virginia Poly Blow 67 to 2.

I used to think the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl was the best, but the Swingline Stapler Bowl beats it hands down!

For you to add the MagicJack bowl on there as one of the worst, I respectfully respond with a simple:

**** You.

Well, I like The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.  But I'm an Army Vet, and a fan of Bell Helicopters, so maybe that explains it.

But some of those bowl game names are just over the top stupid.

What I find funny about it is that you have Bell Helicopters in the bowl game title. Most sponsors want their name featured on a bowl game to help increase their notoriety and get people to buy their product. However, I'm not exactly about to go out and buy a helicopter.

No, nor am I going to.  But we (consumers/gen public) aren't exactly the intended audience. Armed forces/Rescue purchasers world wide are. Putting the name in the title ensures maximum exposure, even to those that will just be looking at the headlines and scores. Will it pay off for Bell?  I don't have any clue. But it does make sense from a marketing perspective for Bell to do it that way.

I hear that the 'Jerry Jones screwed the Cowboys with his real-life game of Fantasy Football Bowl' will be making its debut next year
