Pretty much every year when bowl season starts, you get someone who makes the "when are we going to get the Toilet Bowl?" joke. Even though I hear it ever every year, it's still funny, mainly because it really does seem like a possibility every year. While the Toilet Bowl isn't here quite yet, the truth is that there have been some pretty bizarre bowl names over the years. And luckily, the sports blog The Legend of Cecilio Guante uncovered some of the weirdest. So let's get to it.
The Bacardi Bowl (pictured above): An ode to the rum of Cuba, this bowl game was played in Havana, Cuba seven times, the first game pitting LSU against Havana University in 1907. The last Bacardi Bowl took place in '46 with Southern Miss taking down Havana in a 55-0 squeaker. In case you didn't notice, football isn't really a big sport in Cuba.
The Glass Bowl: The University of Toledo played this bowl game for 4 years from '46-'49, and used it as an opportunity to beat up small east coast colleges like Bates. By the way, Bates is a D-III school. Stay classy, Toledo.
Refrigerator Bowl: The Fridge Bowl was played annually in Evansville, IN from 1948-1956. Sam Houston Teachers College took down Middle Tennessee State back in '56. Why the Refrigerator Bowl? Evansville, IN was known as the "refrigerator capital of the world" back in those days.
The Salad Bowl: Yes, there was indeed a Salad Bowl, played in the 40s and 50s. It was actually a precursor to the Fiesta Bowl, and no, that's not a joke.
Raisin Bowl: Only lasted for 4 years in the late 40s. It shriveled up and died pretty quickly.
Here are some other defunct bowls with terrible names:
- Oil Bowl: Naturally, it took place in Texas.
- Cigar Bowl: Don't think that name would fly today.
- Boot Hill Bowl: With schools like Buena Vista and Saint Mary of the Plains facing each other, this bowl must have been an annual barn burner.
- Poi Bowl: Played in Hawaii, was as bad as poi tastes.
- Haka Bowl: This game was supposed to start in 1996 in Auckland, New Zealand. Then the NCAA woke up and said "what the hell are we doing having a bowl game in New Zealand?"
- Mirage Bowl: Took place in Japan from '76-'93. Why? Who knows.
- Vulcan Bowl: A traditionally black college bowl game, this would have been a hit with Star Trek fans.
- Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl
- MagicJack.com St. Petersburg Bowl
- MicronPC.com Bowl
- Papajohns.com Bowl
- Swingline Stapler Bowl
- The Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl
- Gaylord Hotels Music Bowl
- R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
