Worst Football Fans of the Week: Rutgers Students Chanting "F*&K You Navy"

Yesterday, we noted that Rutgers provided us with the best fan of the week. Today from Mark Dilono of NewJersey.com we learn that Rutgers student section as a whole gets the worst fans of the week award.

"Navy's Reggie Campbell took the kickoff and ran full speed ahead up the middle with all the force his 168-pound body could generate. Campbell, almost always the smallest and fastest man on the field, hit a wall of XXXL-sized scarlet jerseys and was slammed to the ground at the bottom of the pile. He got up slowly, limping off. This gutsy kid, a slotback who already spent three quarters being chased and tackled by gangs of defensive linemen and linebackers, all weighing at least 100 pounds more than him, was then given a dose of Rutgers' student section class.

''You got f---ed up. You got f---ed up. You got f--ed-up," they chanted.

Reggie Campbell is a senior. After graduation in June he has a five-year commitment to the American military, which, like it or not, is at war.

"This is how you treat people who may die for this country?" said Bill Squires, an Annapolis graduate (Class of'75) who was on the sidelines for the Friday night game in Piscataway and was shocked by the obscene chants directed at the Navy players and fans throughout the game. "It was the most classless thing I've seen."

Navy was booed and peppered with "You suck!" chants when they stepped on the field for both halves. Toward the end of the second half, Rutgers students in the new bleacher section began to serenade the adjacent section of Navy fans and uniformed Midshipmen.

''F--- you, Navy. F---you, Navy. F--- you, Navy.""

Greg Schiano is doing a hell of a job teaching his players how to move up in college football's class system. Now it's time for him to teach the students about class.

That is awful. Wasn't it just a few years ago that some of those students wouldn't dare wear a Rutgers football shirt because they were terrible? If you wanna boo the other team when they take the field before the game, ok. But chanting that at a school that isn't your rival and at the end of the year will be fighting to allow you to continue to live your life and go to Rutgers football games is just irresponsible and wrong. F*&k You Rutgers

Not trying to stereotype the Big East, but fans like these are the reason that conference gets no respect. Things like this has happened multiply times (i.e. West Virginia fans s@*ting in other teams fans seats). I am so glad BC left that conference even if it is worse at football.

That is embarrassing. I know they are thinking of it as just another football team "their" team is facing...but its still the Navy. Be smart college kids, and realize what your chanting.

Thanks, Rutgers...How does the Big East expect to be taken seriously when its fans pull stunts like that?  I want Louisville out of that conference SO BAD for that very reason...

An open letter from the AD and VP of Student Affairs to the fans:

Stay Classy, Rutgers

"The behavior was undignified, disrespectful, and unacceptable.  Some parents were so upset by the vulgar chants in the student section that they left the game with their children."

Glad it wasn't just us that felt that way...

I think they put that out once they found out that the "blog-o-sphere" had a hold of the story and it was going get out like it has. Kudos to the AD and VP of Student Affairs though.

It's funny that CF posted a video of the Penn State student section doing the exact same thing against Notre Dame, and no one has said anything about it. Rutgers isn't the only school.

It should be noted that just about every single student section in the country spews obscenities. Even the "classy" schools you support. The issue here has a little bit more to do with Navy and the alumnus being appalled. You don't here about that kind of reaction very often so it must have been extremely bad ... that or it's a really small stadium and you can hear everything.

Rutgers does have a smaller stadium (it is not the Big House, or Penn State).

I think this talks to a bigger issue of respect in general.  The service academies deserve at least a little bit more respect than the average college that comes to town.  You are allowed to hate Notre Dame.  You are allowed to hate Michigan.

But when it comes to Army, Navy, and Air Force (and places like VMI and The Citadel, in basketball), these are young men who have volunteered to put their lives on the line for you after they graduate.  For most of them, this is the biggest joy they get all week, getting to play sports.

Not that anyone really deserves this kind of treatment, but the service academies definitely don't, and should be treated with a lot more respect than this.

I had the opportunity to go to a Notre Dame game against Army last year, and the respect there was definitely something to see.  Army was the show, not the Irish, even though it was their final home game of the year.  Their parachute team brought in the flags, the ball.  They ran onto the field to a standing ovation from the crowd.  And even when they got destroyed on the field, there was a genuine respect among the players and fans.  Say what you want about Notre Dame, but this is one thing they get right.

Rutgers definitely has a lesson to learn here.

It's good I'm allowed to hate Notre Lame. And USC. Oh, and the Huskies. And mostly, the Beavers. LOL except for baseball. But I agree, the military academies deserve more respect for protecting and serving.

Ok I am Air Force and have been for 13 years and my whole family either served and retired or served period. I don't like the Navy team and would never root for them but if I would have been there as a fan I would have punched a few of those a##$%^&* in the mouth. There are things you boo about but saying that was just plain stupid. Where is the apology for that behavior? We see coaches apologize for the fans all the time. I still have yet to see one. Way to go Rutgers Fans! Go NAVY.
