One of the most important things you can do when you an invite an international soccer team to your country is to make sure you know where they're actually from.Apparently Czechoslovakia doesn't believe in that.
On Tuesday, the Czechs pulled a blunder so dumb, it boggles the mind. They hosted an international friendly against Latvia and went the extra mile for their visitors. They displayed the Latvian flag triumphantly and had an error-free listing of the Latvian soccer team with pictures, information, etc.
The Latvian national anthem Dievs, svētī Latviju! (God Bless Latvia) even rang proudly in Stadion Eden in Prague.
But as I'm sure you can probably already guess, the Czechs weren't playing Latvia. They were playing its Balkan neighbor, Lithuania.
Oh man, is that ever bad.
Naturally, heads have rolled over this.
The fallout amid numerous apologies has been drastic. The federation's spokesman Vaclav Tichy took responsibility for the mistakes and resigned from his post. His deputy was fired and another federation official fined.And to top it all off the Czechs kicked
Eh, I don't really consider this to be all that bad. I mean come on, all those Balkan countries sound exactly the same. Plus I could never find any of them on a map, what with them being all tucked away down there near South America.
