Xabi Alonso has backed Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho to continue his search for silverware at Santiago Bernabeu. The Spanish midfielder insists that the fire to win trophies and title is still burning bright within Jose Mourinho.

The former Inter Milan manager has been subjected to heavy criticism from a number of media outlets for setbacks in La Liga and the Champions League. Xabi Alonso jumped to the defense of his manager whilst declaring that he was the best manager Real Madrid could hope for.

“He is eager to do well,” Xabi Alonso told Real Madrid’s official website. “The club is with the coach, the dressing room is with the coach and the Real Madrid fans are as well. He is the best coach that we could have.”

The 31-year-old Spain international, who has been at the heart of Real Madrid’s midfield, believes Jose Mourinho can lead Real Madrid to another La Liga title this season. Presently, Real Madrid are 11 points behind league leaders and archrivals Barcelona.

“From the inside we try to step back and focus. We are self-critical and reflective,” Xabi Alonso said.

“Now we have to play and think and work towards the next matches. About last Saturday, we put ourselves under the pressure and responsibility that comes with playing for Real Madrid.

“Obviously, we can win the league. There is a lot of the season to go. We will try to cut the lead as soon as possible and I am sure that we will be there at the end.”

Xabi Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo are speculated to be amidst a quandary which could lead to the Spaniard’s exit from Real Madrid. Rumors suggest Xabi Alonso could return to his former club Liverpool during the summer transfer window, after all his contract with Real Madrid ends in 2014.

When Xabi Alonso was questioned about his future at Real Madrid, the centre midfielder claimed the time wasn’t right to discuss about his contract.

“We are in the middle of an intense season and everything comes along at its own pace. I am not worried right now,” Xabi Alonso said.

Xabi Alonso has made 12 La Liga appearances and five Champions League appearances for Real Madrid this season.
