Yankees Are Right to Keep Phil Hughes, Balk at Johan Santana Trade
Perhaps I'm a little too conservative when it comes to holding onto top prospects, but I give Brian Cashman a thumps up for his stance thus far on the Johan Santana trade.

Thanks to my interview with Will Carroll last spring, I remain skeptical that a player who throws as hard as Johan Santana can go his entire career without injury. He has had a few elbow issues in the past and I suspect they'll surface again sooner rather than later. Considering the cost of Santana, I wouldn't be willing to gamble that much even though it's clear the Yankees need pitching.

Cashman's job is clearly on the line with this move and I doubt it will please Yankee fans when/if Johan lands in Boston but it's a gamble worth not just this season's success but the next several years.

Should New York unload prospects for Santana?

That's a somewhat broad question.  If we are talking about Cabrera, then yes.  If we are talking about Hughes? yes.  Kennedy? yes.  All three together? NO.

If it was just Hughes and Cabrera, I would probably do it.  Johan Santana IS the best pitcher in the game, currently, while Phil Hughes may become a very good, if not great, pitcher.  Don't forget about Hughes' injury problems either, btw.  The Yankees, much like I was saying about the Tigers yesterday, have a core that's getting older with Jeter, A-Rod, Rivera, etc, albeit not as old as the Tigers.  With Cabrera, he will be a great talent, but I think the Yankees could replace him via free agency.

I think you are just indicative of the current trend of holding onto prospects.  I mostly agree with that thinking, but when you have a chance to get a top-10 MLB player like Miguel Cabrera who has comparables including Hank Aaron, or the most dominant pitcher in baseball over the last several years, like Santana, you do it.  Those players just don't come around every day.

This morning I left a shout out for woody77 and had this to say about the Yankees current stance with Santana:

Until a deal is actually struck, the Yankees are never out of it. I don't think the Yankees are panicking at this point. The Twins are asking them for a lot and they are holding their ground. I really don't think Lester is more appealing to them than Hughes, but if they can get Ellsbury instead of Lester, then I think the Twins would rather take a package from the Red Sox than the Yanks.

After thinking about it more and looking at Santana's numbers against the AL East, Cleveland, and Anaheim, I've grown a little cool to the idea of having him on the Yankees, especially if it means giving up a potential future ace in Hughes.

A rotation of Pettitte, Wang, Hughes, Chamberlain, Mussina/Kennedy can still win plenty of games... especially with that lineup behind them.

As a Twins fan; understanding the entire "risk" of Johan just leaving after next year...I still would/have wanted to see him stay for 08. Honestly; it worries me to lose the guy that has been the guy for this team over the years. I know with Cleveland keeping their guys who won the division, and Detroit getting just that much better with Cabrera; I'm not losing hope with a season that could feature Santana and Liriano in the rotation again.

Just looks like now I need to keep this hoping of no deal being made during the Winter meetings and during Spring Training...

And maybe that Pohlad might actually go nuts and spend his money...

I thought the offer that the Twins made to Santana was actually quite generous: $80 for 4 years. That would give him more money annually than any pitcher. I guess it's just not enough years for Santana's liking, and the Twins won't budge on that.

I understand 80 is very generous, and while I'm not hoping for like an A-rod type deal -- atleast listen to what the guy is asking for. He loves the state and loves the team, and he wouldn't ask for something that is completely unreasonable.

Whatever the situation may be, I'm glad that the Yanks aren't (so they say) going to do this deal. I like our team just fine with Hughes, Kennedy and Cabrera still on it. I would have been pretty upset if we would have given up any of those guys, especially Hughes. I just can't see giving up two potential studs and a rocket arm for Santana. Call me stupid, but I don't think he's worth it. I like the build from within thing much better. Maybe restore a little respect to a tarnished franchise.
