Perhaps I'm a little too conservative when it comes to holding onto top prospects, but I give Brian Cashman a thumps up for his stance thus far on the Johan Santana trade. Thanks to my interview with Will Carroll last spring, I remain skeptical that a player who throws as hard as Johan Santana can go his entire career without injury. He has had a few elbow issues in the past and I suspect they'll surface again sooner rather than later. Considering the cost of Santana, I wouldn't be willing to gamble that much even though it's clear the Yankees need pitching.
Cashman's job is clearly on the line with this move and I doubt it will please Yankee fans when/if Johan lands in Boston but it's a gamble worth not just this season's success but the next several years.
Should New York unload prospects for Santana?
