Yankees Set To Offer AJ Burnett $80 Million. Will Likely Sign Derek Lowe As Well.
Seriously, Why Not Just Buy The World Series Trophy At This Point?
For all of you out there who were hoping that the Yankees might just go silently into the night after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993 this past season, that sure as hell doesn't look like it's going to happen.

First it was the 6-year, $140 million contract to a guy who looks like he could eat himself out of the league by 2010, and now there's this. The Yankees are set to offer the talented but inconsistent AJ Burnett a 5-year deal for $80 million.

So yes, that's two pitchers totaling approximately $220 million. Or about the equivalent of A-Rod's last contract. By the way, read those last two sentences again and just stop and think about that for a moment. That's ridiculous.

And besides all of that, let's just think about this rationally for a moment here. If Sabathia and Burnett sign with the Yankees, combined they'll be getting nearly $40 million per year. The Tampa Bay Rays roster this past season, which made it to the World Series, had a combined payroll of $45 million.

So, in other words, for what the Rays paid to produce a World Series team, the Yankees would field a team of Sabathia, Burnett, and 20% of Alex Rodriguez. Anyone else think the Yankees are going slightly overboard here, or is it just me?

By the way, it isn't stopping with Burnett either. The Yankees are also believed to be in the process of preparing a deal for free-agent Derek Lowe.

And just to truly make your head explode, there have even been relatively solid rumors that the Yankees will do what they can to try and get Jake Peavy in pinstripes. Man, at this rate, the Yankees starting pitching staff will have a higher payroll then the Boston Red Sox's entire team.

What's stunning about all of this is that apparently the Yankees have learned nothing from the Rays' success this past season, which is that you can win without spending insane amounts of money. There's also no guarantee that just because you assemble a roster that has a higher GDP than Malaysia that you'll win a World Series. After all, the Yankees have been spending money like a drunken sailor since their last World Series victory in 2000, and they have absolutely nothing to show for it.

As much as I'd like to go off on a rant about how bad this is baseball - and it is - something tells me that the sweetest thing of all will be watching the Yankees lose in the playoffs to either the Red Sox or Angels or hell, even the Rays. Because when you're going to be spending as much as it looks like the Yankees are going to be spending, anything but a World Series championship is a colossal failure - and might just cause Hank Steinbrenner's head to explode. Which, admittedly, is a great thing to root for.

Yankees prepare AJ offer [New York Post]

Right now the CEO's of the Big Three are trying to figure a way to redesign their assemble lines so they can start making left handed pitchers, all in the hopes that Hank will help bail them out. I know I said this last week, but don't be surprised if the Yankees buy Cuba.

I can see an argument on both sides for paying CC Sabathia and even Jake Peavy.  But AJ Burnett?  He should be no higher than a #3 starter on a bad team and #4 on a good one.  Wherever you have the Yanks at that still doesn't make $80 million for him even slightly a good idea.

In terms of health and durability Burnett is a risk not worth the 5 years and 80 million the yankees are offering him.  But his stuff is amongst the elite pitchers in the league, and with any kind of head game he is a #1, #2 starter at worst.  His problem is staying on the field.  Either way the offer from the Yankess is ridiculous.

Health is my biggest issue with him.  He was 69-66 before this past season and had never won more than 12 games in any one year, and that came in 2005 when he went 12-12.  This year he goes 18-10 with a low AL era of 4.07 and their throwing $80 million at him?  WOW!

I think what this proves is that the Yankees are the Scott Boras of baseball teams.

I guess the Yankees expect to win games 3-2 most nights. They're hitting wasn't that good last year (also way overpaid) and CC, Lowe, and Peavy have never faced the talent of hitting on a daily basis that they will in the deep AL East. Don't forget the Blue Jays when talking about Boston and Tampa Bay, they've got some good players too. If whatever combination of pitchers they pick up are consistantly great, welcome back to the playoffs Yankees fans, if not they'll be the first team in sports history to waste 500 MILLION on an average team.

The funny thing is that Burnett had his worst year since 2003 and because everyone is suckered in by wins they think this guy is worth a $15 mil a year contract. He's going to be 32 in January and most likely has already hit his prime.  This would be a horrible contract.

the steinbrenners are still spending money from the reggie jackson days, so they're not concerned about payroll.

If the Yankees give that money to Sabathia and Burnett they'll be sorry.  The Brewers allowed Sabathia to pitch too many complete games (because their bullpen was inconsitent) and down the stretch he pitched on short rest several times.  He is in for a "tired arm" year and the Yankees will be stuck.  Burnett is overrated.

Well said. He absolutely has no-hit stuff and finally put together a full season in 08, but there's no doubt he'll get hurt. That rumored offer is just unreal. Dempster's deal pretty much looks like a steal now for the Cubs if that's what pitchers are going to be getting. Then again, the Yanks are probably offering at least 10 million more than anybody else would for Burnett.

Truthfully....Does it really feel better to sleep with a "hooker" vs. your high-school sweetheart every night? The Yankees are turning the MLB into a High-Stakes brothel....It's just absolutely ridiculous.

Just another reason to hate The Yankees. A.J. Brunett is overrated, and Sabathia didn't do nothing against the Red Sox in their last playoff meeting. Here is a new idea! The words "Farm System" mean anything in New York ?
