There's been a lot of angst directed at the Toronto Maple Leafs this year, basically because they suck. Canadians don't like losers, and the Leafs have been that and more so this year. Naturally, you'd think a team that has already pissed off its entire fan base would just try and finish out the season on a quiet note and try not to draw too much attention to itself. But the Leafs don't roll like that, son.
Apparently the Leafs will soon have even more people hating their guts from all over Canada as they seem to be directly responsible for getting three high-profile TV shows canceled.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has axed the shows MVP, JPod and Intelligence because with the Leafs not likely to make the Stanley Cup playoffs this year, the public broadcaster's arts and entertainment division is going to take a $10-million hit. Somewhat ironic in all of this is that MVP is a nighttime NHL soap. So the Leafs are even killing hockey TV shows. Way to go, guys.
A program director denied that the Leafs were sole reason why the shows were getting cut, but you'd have a hard time convincing the shows creators of that.
"It's just another good reason to hate the Leafs," said Mary Young Leckie, the creator of MVP.
J.B. Sugar, executive producer of JPod, also thought the Leafs were the culprits.
"The ad revenue that would have come in for the Maple Leafs in the playoffs would have been significant to the network, so that makes sense," he said. "I know that hockey certainly drives the schedule over there and possibly the finances too."
Man, if I'm the Maple Leafs, this season can't end fast enough. Otherwise, pretty soon were going to find out the Leafs has something to do with North Korea's acquisition of nuclear weapons.
