About Me:
I'm the type of guy that enjoys playing each sport as I do watching them. I'll watch games during the evening after a long day at work, but I would rather hang with one or more of my friends, drink a cold beer, and watch the Vikings beat on the Packers.

Young Stars on the Rise
1/9/08

The sun is shinning very bright in LA right now, and why not? What started out this summer as another Laker's' soap opera, has now become the talk of the NBA. This is by far the best Laker's team--post Shaq.

With the emergence of young superstars, Andrew Barnum and Jordan Farmar, this LA team has become one of the deepest in the league. A. Bynum is consistent in two ways: his defense has improved and he nearly averages a double-double per game. While Farmar is not in the starting line-up, he provides a spark, the razzle-dazzle coming off the bench--much like Bob Cousy did for Boston during the 1950s and 1960s.

The signing of Derek Fisher this off-season was probably one of the best acquisitions that know one heard about. Fisher has matured over the years, and has become one of the leaders of this young team. He is arguably playing his best ball of his career. He knows the system. He is a pure shooter, and is showing it by averaging over 40% above the arch.

And, let us now forget Mr. Bryant. Kobe is not going to win the scoring title. He is not going to have the huge numbers, but what he does have is the trust in his team. Make no mistake about it, this is Kobe's team. He is the leader. He is having fun. Have you noticed just how relaxed he is playing? You don't see him having to force every shot. He doesn't need to play every minute and make every play. He has a team filled with multiple players that are good, if not great, at each position. He has faith in each of them that he previously lacked. Now he can relax and enjoy the game without having all the pressure put on his shoulders.

This is a young Laker's team that should be able to compete with any team. What started out as a soap opera, may turn into an NBA Championship?

I hate the Lakers, but I agree that they are looking strong.  I watched Farmar play in college many times, and I'm surprised at how well he's doing.  He was always good at UCLA, but I never thought he'd be decent in the NBA.  He's proof that hard work pays off.

It seems to me that the Lakers are overachieving. The question is how long can they do that during the interminable NBA season. They aren't good enough to win it all right now, which means Kobe might want to walk yet again at the end of the season.

This team is in a good position if they can keep Bryant, considering the young talent they have. But he's obviously the X-factor. He leaves, and this team isn't much better than a mediocre to bad team.
