This past weekend at Toyota Speedway of Irwindale. The fans were treated to a really good night of racing. For those of you who havent made the time to go support your local short tracks. You never know what you might be missing.
The first cars to take to the third mile were the Bandeleros. They are mini cup cars with 20 or 30 horespower engines. The age group is usually between 7 and 13. This is where the future stars of Nascar cut there teeth. There were even 2 girls racing. They dont go very fast. But its really awesome to see kids of that age out on the track racing side by side.
Greg Biffle Inc. was there with 2 of his developmental drivers. One in a legend car. And the other in a American Race Truck. The driver of the legend car was only 14 years old. And the driver of the truck was barely 16. It seems that alot more younger drivers are taking to the short saturday night tracks. The driver who won the super late race couldnt have been pushing more then 20 years old.
The winner of the legend race was only 14 years old. He beat out a 30 year old who is a past champion. It was truly amazing at the way this teenager handled the car. Then after the race when they interviewed him. He handled the interview like someone who had won before. And this was his first win.
But the night belonged to 19 year old Ricky "Bobby" James. He won the truck race by passing and fighting his way through the field. He also did a few doughnuts after he won. But what really made this win the most impressive of the night. The driver was a parapalegic. He had a special control handle where the turn signal would go on our everyday car. To give the truck gas and also to brake. So which meant that he drove with one hand. I was totally in awe at the way he handled the truck. Then to do burnouts afterwards. That alone was worth the price of admission.
After the races were over. I walked the pits to talk to some of the drivers. To show my support. There are alot of young guns out there. Parents are really starting the kids off at a young age. Talking to a few of them. They all have dreams of making it to the cup series someday. With the talent that is being groomed. Im sure that someday a few of them will make it.
Now is the time to support the local tracks. Because some day there might not be any left. It seems that more and more of them are closing. And this where the Dale Jr's and the Jeff Gordon's get there first start. Once again it was fun night. To sit in the stands. Watching race after race. Wondering which one of these will be the next big star. Im Out
