According to NFL.com, Mettenberger has been diagnosed with a condition called Spondylolysis, which could lead to durability issues in the future.

It wasn't much of a problem during his senior season at LSU, according to the team trainer there, but the rigors of NFL play and practice could take a lot more of a toll on his back, and it might be the straw that breaks the camel's back (pun intended) when teams are deciding whether to take Mettenberger or take their chances with another QB.

Mettenberger is projected as a backup QB in the NFL, so a team might be willing to overlook this if they think that he'll be able to step in and play a few quarters or a few games if absolutely necessary.
