Nadal will comeback, although probably not for this Wimbledon. He seems to have sustained injury. He has six titles at 22 years of age, and chances are, if his body holds up, he might win all four slams and even beat the record Federer is gonna set. Which is a great thing, but people forget that tennis is an entertainment, like movies. You don't remember a hero for the number of superhit movies, do you? Just watch the style. That is what matters.
Nadal fans, consider this equation. Nadal can beat Federer, but Federer can beat anybody who beats Nadal. Which proves, unless, you manage to get a psychological grip on Federer, it is very difficult to beat him. This tournament is for the statistics guys. He has won 14 titles now, equalling the Pete Sampras recors and Sampras never won the French open. If greatness is determined by number of title, which is a false notion, Federer is the greatest.
True, he was exceedingly lucky; Djokovic, Murray and Nadal were all out quickly. I would say he deserved it, for this is the fourth time he came to the French final and holds the record for having appeared atleast in semifinals of 19 consecutive grandslams, a phenomenal achievement in itself. In any case, he played as he has always played and won covincingly.
Now watch out for the Wimbledon, starting on 22nd June. Wimbledon is his second home, until Nadal won, and he will want to get it back. And his tears of joy, coming after the "God it's killing me" breakdown of the Australian open, warmed my heart. But have no doubt, watching Federer play is a pleasure, win or lose.
And oh, Leander Paes, our own racquet warrior, won the doubles. Sad to see him without Mahesh Bupathi. I hope somebody from India rises up in the singles game. Tennis is best when two players, locked in their own minds, alone on the court, with no other help, battle it out.
