Tonight marked the beginning of Will's Spring soccer season. The day started off nicely weather wise, but as it got closer to practice time...of course - it turned. I am used to the soccer fields being usually about 10 degrees colder than anywhere else in Newark- but tonight it was rainy and cold. A perfect start to the season. Somehow when I volunteered to coach in the fall, they just assumed I would do it again! Will was somewhat disappointed that I was his coach, because he felt that G would have been a better choice. He explained that G was already a coach and I was just his mom. I explained that G was a track and field coach, not to mention G HATES soccer. (in all fairness he thinks it would be fun to play- but he hates to watch it.)
4 of the boys are all from the team in the fall, and we had one additional player who Will played with his first season at NASA. The boys are adorable, I suppose that is not what the coach should say about their team, but these boys are. They are a lot of fun- not sure that any of them will be in the MLS anytime soon- but they sure do try hard. They try anything I ask them to do. Well, except one. And I bet you can guess which child that is- WILL. Because he is a "soccer expert" he kept trying to coach. I finally explained that this team had one coach, and he would sit down if he kept it up. We ended practice with a scrimmage against the Chicago Fire, (they are all named after MLS teams- we are Houston Dynamo) and the boys did pretty well. Will managed to score- and they actually picked up almost where they left off last season together. It took forever in the fall for them to start working together- and tonight they were playing together pretty well.
Now if I could only get Will to stop coaching from the side lines...he cracked me up- he was yelling "WHAT ARE YOU DOING GABE???? GET IN FRONT OF THE GUY- GET THE BALL!" Again I reminded him he was not in charge and needed not to question the other players. He was more encouraging after that. All and all I was happy with the boys and their effort in the cold and rain. I was most impressed with all the other moms- cause they had to sit there watching the practice- at least I was up and running around with the boys to keep warm.
First game is Saturday!
