Shawne Merriman is going to play through 2 torn ligaments in his knee, despite warnings from doctors that it could result in a career-ending injury. If Merriman doesn't re-consider, he could very well be looking at some gruesome long-term consequences. The picture linked here (it's not for the squeamish) is exactly what COULD happen, and it's what happened to another linebacker who thought it would be a good idea to ignore knee injuries, and play anyway.Former NFL linebacker Reggie Williams played through the pain of knee injuries throughout his career. Today, he's regretting it. And he's hoping that Shawne Merriman is able to learn from HIS mistakes, and not make the same ones that Williams did.
The thing that seems the most shocking to me is that Merriman was willing to take steroids, and risk missing a quarter of the season due to the subsequent suspension, but when his career is at risk, he wants to play. To me, that seems like a slap in the face to his team, and the doctors who are looking out for his well-being.
Then again, Merriman has never been known for his intelligence. He's a great player, but sometimes it takes a little more than that. We'll see if he makes the right choice.
