Recap: San Diego vs. Colorado
By Sports Network
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Luis Rodriguez drove in both San Diego runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth as San Diego pulled out a 2-1 win over Colorado in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Brian Giles and Will Venable each had two hits for the Padres, who have won five of their last six.
Jake Peavy was nearly unhittable in eight scoreless innings on the mound, striking out a season-high 13 and scattering five hits and two walks. But the reigning NL Cy Young winner took a no-decision after Trevor Hoffman (3-6) blew his fourth save of the season but ended up in the win column regardless.
Jeff Francis was nearly as effective as Peavy, allowing a run on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in his seven-inning start. Troy Tulowitzki and Scott Podsednik each had two hits, while Chris Iannetta drove in the Rockies' only run as Colorado fell for the third time in four games. Taylor Buchholz (6-4) took the loss for the visitors.
Hoffman faced the heart of the Rockies order with a 1-0 lead in the ninth, and with two runners on, Iannetta dribbled a pinch-hit, run-scoring single up the middle to tie it.
Buchholz couldn't send the game into extra innings, as Venable opened the bottom half with a single, moved to third on Giles' one-out base hit, and scored on Rodriguez's liner to right.
The Padres broke a scoreless tie in the fifth thanks to Peavy getting on with a one-out single to center. After an out, Rodriguez doubled into the right- field gap, and Peavy sprinted around from first for the game's first run.
After giving up a leadoff single to Podsednik in the third, Peavy retired 13 straight before Ian Stewart blooped a one-out base hit to left. Stewart tried to get something going but was thrown at second by Chase Headley trying to turn his hit into a double .
