Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Alexi Casilla's RBI base hit with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted Minnesota over Detroit, 6-5, in the one-game playoff for the AL Central title.
Orlando Cabrera hit a two-run homer and Jason Kubel added a solo shot for the Twins (87-76), who won the division for the first time since 2006 and advanced to the American League Division Series against the AL East-champion Yankees beginning Wednesday at 6:07 p.m. (et) in the Bronx.
Facing Fernando Rodney (2-5), Carlos Gomez began the home 12th with a base hit. Michael Cuddyer's groundout moved him to second then Delmon Young was intentionally walked. Casilla, who was inserted in the game as a pinch-runner in the 10th, followed by bouncing a ball through the right side to plate Gomez with the winning run.
The hit made a winner of Bob Keppel (1-1), who allowed one hit over 1 1/3 relief innings.
Just two innings prior, Casilla was thrown out at home trying to score on a line out to left by Nick Punto.
Matt Tolbert added two hits and an RBI for Minnesota, which became the first team in major-league history to win a division crown after being behind three games with four to play.
Miguel Cabrera slugged a two-run homer while Magglio Ordonez also homered and knocked in two for the Tigers (86-77), who failed to lock up the division with a comfortable lead in September for the second time in four seasons. Detroit hasn't won a division title since 1987.
Detroit also suffered a late-year collapse in 2006 which saw Minnesota take the AL Central, but the Tigers got the wild card slot that year.
