Recap: Chicago Cubs vs. Florida
By Sports Network
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Mike Fontenot's pinch-hit three-run double broke open a tie game in the seventh inning as the Chicago Cubs came from behind to defeat the Florida Marlins 9-6 to earn a split in the their four- game set at Wrigley Field.
Alfonso Soriano was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer, while Derrek Lee added a solo shot for Chicago, which had dropped seven of its previous 10 games.
Chad Gaudin (1-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief of Jason Marquis, who was credited with six runs on nine hits to go with three walks and six strikeouts in six innings of work. Jeff Samardzija, who was called up from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the week, hurled two pristine innings for his first career save.
Mike Jacobs homered twice and finished with five RBI for the Marlins, who had won two straight. Dan Uggla also went deep and scored three times in defeat.
Florida starter Rick VandenHurk, who threw five hitless innings in his last outing, fanned six but yielded five runs on eight hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Mark Hendrickson (7-8) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in three innings of relief.
Trailing 6-5 in the seventh, Lee started the Cubs' four-run frame with a leadoff blast to center field off Hendrickson. Chicago then loaded the bases after Lee's 17th homer of the season, and Fontenot cleared the bases by roping a one-hopper to the left field wall.
The Cubs blew late-inning leads in the previous two games in the series, but Samardzija ended any possibility of a third straight come-from-behind win for the visitors.
After a perfect eighth, the former Notre Dame duel-sport star fanned Hanley Ramirez and Jeremy Hermida before getting Jorge Cantu to line out to center to end the game.
Marquis got himself in trouble in the second by walking Josh Willingham and hitting Uggla with a pitch. Jacobs then worked a full count and slugged a three-run shot to straightaway center field for a 3-0 Marlins lead.
Jacobs came calling again in the third, smacking a blast to deep right that appeared to hit the top of the wall. While originally ruled a double, the umpires conferred and determined the ball cleared the netting atop the right field wall and Jacobs was rewarded with a two-run homer, his 22nd of the year, and a 5-0 lead.
In the home half, the Cubs put a pair in scoring position for the heart of their lineup. Lee grounded out to short to bring in a run and Aramis Ramirez hit a shot into the ivy in left field for a ground rule double to plate another.
An inning later Soriano tied the game at five with one swing of the bat. After Henry Blanco singled and Marquis worked a walk, Soriano unloaded on an outside offering from VandenHurk that found the right field seats.
Uggla brought the lead back with a leadoff shot in the fifth, his 25th of the year.
