St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Jody Gerut's infield single produced the go- ahead run in the 10th inning and Ryan Braun followed with an RBI double, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the NL Central champion St. Louis Cardinals, 9-7, at Busch Stadium to conclude the regular season.
Prince Fielder homered twice, raising his total to 46, and drove in three runs for the Brewers, who are out of the playoffs after securing a postseason berth last year for the first time since 1982. Fielder finished with 141 RBI, tying him with Philadelphia's Ryan Howard for tops in the majors.
Jason Kendall hit a two-run double, while Alcides Escobar went 2-for-4 and scored three times for Milwaukee.
Brewers starter Jeff Suppan gave up a run on two hits in two innings before he was lifted in favor of Chris Narveson, who allowed three runs -- one earned -- in 4 1/3 innings.
David Freese knocked in three runs for the Cardinals, who lost eight of their last 10 games to close out the regular season. St. Louis heads to Los Angeles to face the NL West-champion Dodgers in the opening round of the playoffs. The best-of-five Division series is set to begin on Wednesday at 9:37 p.m. (et) at Dodger Stadium.
Joel Pineiro yielded four runs -- three earned -- on six hits over five full frames for the Cardinals.
