Recap: Colorado vs. Philadelphia
By Sports Network
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Ryan Howard's two-run double followed by Jayson Werth's go-ahead single led Philadelphia's three-run, two-out rally in the ninth, as the defending World Series-champion Phillies filled out baseball's championship series with a 5-4 victory over Colorado at Coors Field.
The Phillies won the best-of-five NL Division Series in four games, capturing the final two in frosty Denver. That set up a rematch of last season's National League Championship Series between the Phillies and Dodgers, with Game 1 scheduled for Thursday night in Los Angeles.
The Angels and New York Yankees will face off in the American League Championship Series beginning on Friday.
The ninth-inning drama began with Chase Utley's patient at-bat and eventual walk to put two runners on with two outs versus Huston Street (0-2). Howard swatted a 2-1 fastball over the head of Carlos Gonzalez in right, scoring both Shane Victorino and Utley to tie the game at 4-4. Victorino reached base earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice.
Werth then stepped to the plate and went with an outside pitch, placing it into left-center for the go-ahead hit. Street was charged with all three runs on three hits with one walk.
Colorado put two runners on base against Scott Eyre in the ninth before Brad Lidge came on to strike out Troy Tulowitzki for the final out. Lidge saved the final two games of this series.
Philadelphia's rally came after Colorado put together one of its own in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three times.
Cliff Lee issued a one-out walk to Dexter Fowler, who leaped over Utley on a grounder to second by Todd Helton, a play that forced a wide shovel throw from Utley and Jimmy Rollins, leaving two runners on. Lee then exited for Ryan Madson (1-0), who came into the game with Ben Francisco in left. Francisco promptly made a diving catch on a fly ball by Tulowitzki for the second out.
Pinch-hitter Jason Giambi then fisted a fastball in front of Francisco for a game-tying single and Yorvit Torrealba followed with a missile to right- center, a ball that one-hopped against the fence for a two-run double and a 4-2 lead.
Lee was charged with three runs -- one earned -- on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 7 1/3 frames.
Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez was also solid on the mound, giving up two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.
