Recap: Texas Tech vs. Kansas State

Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Steven Sheffield, in his first career start, threw for 490 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a convincing 66-14 win over the Kansas State Wildcats in a Big 12 tilt at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Sheffield completed 33-of-41 tosses in place of normal starter Taylor Potts, who was out with a concussion. Detron Lewis led the Red Raiders (4-2, 1-1 Big 12) with eight grabs for 100 yards and two touchdowns, while Baron Batch led the TTU ground attack with 86 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries.

KSU (3-3, 1-1) was paced by Keithen Valentine, who carried the ball eight times for 96 yards and a score.

TTU took control of the game early in the first quarter, when Sheffield hooked up with Tramain Swindall for a 52-yard touchdown strike.

The Red Raiders took a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter after Sheffield hit Alexander Torres from six yards out for the score.

Matt Williams opened up the second quarter scoring for TTU with a 20-yard field goal to give the Red Raiders a 17-0 lead.

TTU made it a 24-0 game midway through the second quarter, when Sheffield found Lewis for a four-yard score.

Sheffield went back to work minutes later, hooking up with Jacoby Franks from 72 yards out for the score.

TTU scored again on its last possession of the half, as Sheffield and Torres connected on their second touchdown strike of the night, this one from 28 yards out to give the Red Raiders a 38-0 lead at the half.

KSU finally scored in the opening minutes of the second half, as Jeffrey Fitzgerald stepped in front of a Sheffield pass and returned it 17 yards for the score.

The Red Raiders responded midway through the third quarter with a four-yard touchdown run by Batch to make it a 45-7 contest.

TTU continued to roll in the third quarter, as Lewis and Sheffield connected for a 12-yard touchdown pass to give the Red Raiders a 52-7 lead heading into the final quarter.

Sheffield finished his night early in the fourth quarter, but not before he found Lyle Leong from 25 yards out for his seventh touchdown.

The Wildcats added a late touchdown on an eight-yard run by Valentine.

The Red Raiders put one final touchdown on the board late in the fourth quarter, when back-up quarterback Seth Doege hit Brik Brinker for a seven-yard touchdown pass to seal the 66-14 victory.

The Red Raiders dominated KSU on both sides of the ball, outgaining the Wildcats 739-284, while collecting two sacks and a pair fumble recoveries.
