Recap: Tampa Bay vs. Boston
By Sports Network
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Phil Kessel scored twice, and David Krejci had a go-ahead shorthanded goal in the third period, as the Boston Bruins topped the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-1, at St. Pete Times Forum.
Marc Savard ended with a pair of assists for Boston, which has won three in a row and seven of eight overall. Tim Thomas stopped 30-of-31 shots in the win for the Bruins, who started December with a win after going 11-1-1 in November.
Martin St. Louis had the lone goal for the Lightning, who have lost six in a row and 11 of 12. Mike Smith gave up two goals on 25 shots in the loss.
With the game tied 1-1 after two periods, Krejci turned a power play defense into a Boston lead. Shane Hnidy was in the box for holding, and near the end of the penalty the Bruins got control of the puck, and Krejci streaked into the Tampa end with the disc.
Skating through the right circle, he slowed drastically, pulled the puck back and shifted to his left to shed his defender, and beat Smith at 8:17 of the third for a 2-1 Boston lead.
The Bruins held the lead down the stretch, and Kessel notched an empty-net goal -- his 15th tally of the season -- with 0.5 seconds remaining.
St. Louis got the game's first goal, at 1:21 of the opening period, but Kessel tied the game at the 12:21 mark of the second.
