Recap: Edmonton vs. Dallas
By Sports Network
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Lubomir Visnovsky, Ales Hemsky and Andrew Cogliano each scored a goal and added an assist, as the Edmonton Oilers notched a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars at Rexall Place.
Shawn Horcoff and Marc-Antoine Pouliot also scored a goal for the Oilers, who had lost five straight at home before the win Wednesday. Mathieu Garon snapped a personal five-game losing streak and won for the first time since October 18 with a 23-save effort.
Mike Modano's 10th and 11th goals of the season were the only tallies for the Stars, who had beaten the Oilers seven straight times coming into Wednesday's contest. Marty Turco allowed three goals on 21 shots in taking the loss.
Stars forward Sean Avery, who was suspended indefinitely for crude comments made before the team's game against Calgary Tuesday, issued some apologetic remarks on Wednesday.
"I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary," Avery said in a statement obtained by SportingNews.com. "I should not have made those comments, and I recognize that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were. I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers, as well as people I have been close with in the past."
Horcoff got the Oilers on the board in a hurry. Only 71 seconds into the contest, Horcoff scored his seventh of the season thanks to assists from Dustin Penner and Hemsky.
Edmonton took a 2-0 lead into the second period thanks to a late power-play goal. After taking a pass from Cogliano at the point, Visnovsky's slapshot made it through traffic and past Turco with 12 seconds to go in the period.
The Oilers took a commanding three-goal lead on Pouliot's second of the season at 3:41 into the second period.
Dallas got on the board early in the third period. Fabian Brunnstrom's shot from the right circle was saved and a rebound caromed out in front. Modano took the rebound, and his shot grazed Garon's glove and went in just 1:07 into the third.
Modano made it a 3-2 game late in the third, as he took a shot from the slot that went to the top left corner of the goal past Garon with just 1:40 to play.
The Stars pulled Turco with a minute to play, but Hemsky's eighth goal of the year into the open net sealed the victory for Edmonton. An late odd-man rush produced Cogliano's tally to account for the final margin.
