Recap: Columbus vs. Detroit
By Sports Network
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Nicklas Kronwall and Justin Abdelkader each scored twice and the Red Wings got goals from seven different players in a 9-1 rout of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Kris Draper, Pavel Datsyuk, Dan Cleary, Ville Leino and Todd Bertuzzi also found the back of the net for Detroit, which had a three-game win streak snapped Saturday in Toronto. Jimmy Howard recorded 25 saves in the victory.
It was the most goals the Wings have scored against Columbus since the Blue Jackets joined the league in 2000. Kronwall ended with a three-point night while Bertuzzi, Datsyuk, Cleary and Henrik Zetterberg put forth multi-point efforts.
Columbus had earned a point in five straight contests (3-0-2) prior to Wednesday's lopsided loss. It was the first matchup between these two Central division clubs since Columbus' first-ever playoff appearance came to a swift end via last season's four-game sweep by the Red Wings.
Steve Mason continued his early-season struggles -- beaten three times on six shots over the opening 7 1/2 minutes. After Mathieu Garon came on to make 11 saves to finish out the first, Mason was back in net to start the second. The reigning Calder Trophy winner ended up allowing eight goals on 27 shots in defeat.
Rick Nash's 12th goal of the season represented the lone bright spot, spoiling the 1,000th NHL game behind the bench for Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock, who nonetheless became the 16th coach in league history to reach the mark.
Detroit took control just 1:05 in as Zetterberg blasted a tipped an errant Columbus clear on net and Cleary was there to slide the rebound past Mason.
Less than two minutes later Mason gave up a bad goal off the stick of Datsyuk, who wristed a playable puck from above the left circle that deflected in off his catching glove.
A little over four minutes later it was 3-0 after Brett Lebda cranked a low shot from the right point that was tipped home by Draper, resulting in Mason being pulled.
It became 4-0 on a Detroit power play after Kronwall unleashed a slap shot from the point past a Bertuzzi screen at 11:57.
Columbus finally got on the board at 10:56 of the second when R.J. Umberger threw the puck toward the crease from the left-wing side and Nash swiped it over the goal line.
The home score was wiped out, though, only 2:21 later as Bertuzzi fired the puck past a prone Mason. Only 33 seconds later, Leino found the back of the net for a 6-1 affair.
It only got worse for the home-standing Blue Jackets in the third, as Kronwall added another and Abdelkader tallied the final two scores.
