Recap: Washington vs. NY Islanders
By Sports Network
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Chris Clark tallied the deciding goal in the 11th round of the shootout as Washington rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat the New York Islanders, 5-4, at Verizon Center.
Clark opened the 11th and final round with a snapshot under the crossbar, and Semyon Varlamov was able to make a pad stop on Mark Streit to end the contest.
Alexander Semin recorded a pair of goals in regulation for the Capitals, who have won three in a row and emerged victorious in the longest shootout this season.
Tomas Fleischmann and Eric Fehr also tallied while Varlamov finished the game with 25 saves. Jose Theodore got the start but was pulled after allowing three goals on five shots in less than seven minutes.
Streit, Matt Moulson, Sean Bergenheim and Trent Hunter hit the net for the Islanders, who have dropped three of four. Dwayne Roloson let up four goals on 41 shots in the loss.
Semin tallied eight seconds after the opening faceoff, as an Islanders turnover in the neutral zone found the stick of Brendan Morrison. He fed ahead to Semin, who blasted a shot from the right circle.
New York countered 54 seconds later, as Moulson followed up a rebound and scored into a half-open net, and Streit launched one from the left side from a faceoff for a 2-1 Isles lead at 5:10.
Bergenheim converted a breakaway at 6:54 for a 3-1 game and Varlamov was called in for Theodore.
The Caps came back with 6:18 to go on a power play, as Fleischmann's slapper from the right circle came after Nicklas Backstrom lost control of the puck in the slot.
Semin struck again, this time on a Caps power play at 5:35 of the second period to knot the game, 3-3, and a fluke turnaround backhander from Fehr with 3:14 remaining in the second put Washington ahead.
Hunter pulled New York even with just 2:08 left in regulation when his left- circle blast sizzled by Varlamov. Washington outshot its foes 4-1 in a scoreless overtime.
