Recap: Boston vs. Pittsburgh

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Tim Thomas made 27 saves and notched his 14th career shutout to lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at TD Garden.

Matt Hunwick and Daniel Paille scored for the Bruins, who have won two straight following a three-game winless streak. Thomas also earned his second shutout of the season. Patrice Bergeron added an empty-net tally in the win.

Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 26 shots for the Penguins, who have lost three consecutive games for the first time since Dan Bylsma took over as the club's head coach last season.

Following a scoreless opening period -- a mostly defensive struggle between the blue lines -- the Bruins grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the middle session on Hunwick's fourth goal of the season. Hunwick gained control in the lower portion of the left circle and lifted a turnaround backhander into the cage at 1:36.

In the early stages of the third period, the Bruins moved ahead by two. After a blocked shot in the Boston defensive zone, the puck fluttered along the boards and eventually made its way into the neutral zone. From the right half- wall, Mark Recchi sent a lead pass to Paille, who skated in all alone on a clear breakaway before his wrister from in close beat Fleury above the glove at the 3:34 mark.

The visitors had a few quality scoring chances to try to get back into the game down the stretch. Jordan Staal had a good look from the slot midway through the third, but his snap shot missed a bit high. With under four minutes remaining, the Pens had a momentary 2-on-1 break, but the puck skipped away.

Thomas nailed down the shutout with 12 saves throughout the final stanza before Bergeron's short-handed empty-netter in the waning seconds capped the scoring.
