Recap: Red Bull New York vs. Toronto FC
By Sports Network
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Chad Barrett scored twice as Toronto FC won for just the third time on the road to improve its slim playoff chances and hand New York its third straight loss, 3-1 at Giants Stadium on Saturday.
Toronto FC (8-12-7), which got its other goal from Abdus Ibrahim, is still last in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference but snapped its seven-match winless streak and is just four points out of a playoff spot.
New York (9-10-8) lost three straight for the first time all season and now has four teams within three points for one of the final two wildcard playoff spots.
Barrett, who has four goals since being traded from Chicago to Toronto and nine overall, opened the scoring in the 27th minute on an unassisted finish.
New York climbed back into the game four minutes into the second half when Dane Richards scored his third of the season with assists from Juan Pablo Angel and Kevin Goldthwaite.
TFC settled back in after the tying goal and Barrett delivered the match-winner in 65th minute. Defender Marvell Wynne squared a pass from the left side across the area to Barrett, who finished well inside the right post from a few yards.
Ibrahim replaced Barrett late in the game and delivered the insurance goal with less than five minutes remaining. Johann Smith, another late-match substitute, found Ibrahim with a perfect cross from the right and the 17-year-old headed to the near post for his second goal of the season.
Toronto goalie Greg Sutton finished with nine saves, among them a few big saves on Mike Magee and one on Angel. TFC will try to stay alive in the playoff race on Oct. 11 when it visits FC Dallas.
New York, which has allowed 11 goals during its three-match skid, will try to get back on track Thursday at Real Salt Lake.
