Defending Champ Mauresmo Upset at Australian Open

Defending champion and 2nd seeded Amelie Mauresmo was shockingly bounced for the Austrlian Open by unknown Lucie Safarova. Safarova was previously best known for being the girlfriend of rising male star Tomas Berdych.

It was upset day for the women at the AO, as three other top 10 seeds were ousted. Third seed Svetlana Kutzensova fell to Shahar Peer. Seventh seed Elena Dementieva lost to Nicole Vaidisova (not really an upset, as Vaidisova is the tenth seed). Finally, ninth seed Dinara Safina lost to Na Li.

Na Li always seems to upset a higher seed in every major she plays.

I'm most surprised by Kuznetsova going down.  Shes been more consistant than any other player on the tour in the last year.  This will sure shake up the tournament though.

 

This really puts Serena in a position to sneak into the finals, but more likely Vaidisova will go.
