Old news, but can't help myself. Five months ago, I brought home a sickly lil baby that couldn't even walk out of the shelter under her own power. (Hence the pic of me struggling to carry her out to the car. I made it, but just barely.) Since that time, I've apparently raised a behemoth. Don't know if this set of pics captures her growth or development the way I'm trying, but boy, do I have a big, healthy baby girl on my hands now!

I'll admit to some stress during mine and Katie's first month or two, getting her well and assimilating her into the family, but our time together since then has been great! I hope if any of you guys are thinking about getting a pet, cat or dog, you will check with your local shelters before buying. There are so many animals looking for a home, you might be surprised.  (Disclaimer: One of my three dogs is purebred, bought from a breeder. I hope that my 2 "rescues" make up for my doing that. I admit, I'll always have a dog of his breed, but I also want to do what I can to help others who need a home.)

Thanks for looking at my baby girl! Isn't she lovely?

Is this the girl we helped name? She is awesome Ms. Jan. Both my girls are mutts off the street. Not that I haven't owned a pure bred or two in my life, and there isn't anything wrong with that. If you can afford and want something special no reason to enjoy. Helping the less fortunate dogs is hard,  Not knowing the background and what you might expect as far as illness in the future is scary. I salve my guilt by donating stuff to the local shelter. With the boys, honestly two girls is all I can handle.

Yep, that's Katie Belle. The vet's fear that her illnesses would leave her sickly and stunted turned out to be very misplaced.  She eats like a horse and seems to grow more every day!  And you're right about the sketchy past of some shelter babies...would've had a catastrophe on my hands if my other two hadn't been current on their vaccinations when I brought Katie home.  My three "kids" all have different backgrounds - one purebred, one I rescued, and one shelter baby...we're a well-rounded group. :)

Response to your disclaimer (I've been following Katie's progress and OMG I'm so happy!) there's a specific breed I always want to have too...I don't have it now, but I will...I will look at the shelters first, but will be buying if I can't find one there. I will also always have rescues. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting breeds you can't find in shelters or rescue services, but I totally get it - I feel the need to make up for it too.

So what's your "favored breed", Jess?! My dad got me my first toy fox terrier pup when I was in high school, and I've been in love with the little guys ever since. I've never gone more than a couple of months without one. They are tiny, but definitely not the typical little foo foo dog-very energetic and playful.  Both of Danny Boy's big shep-sisters will lay down to play with him so they're on the same level. Pretty sweet to see these two gentle giants playing with a little guy whose head fits in their mouths.

Golden Retriever...I shoulda remembered. blush Think you mentioned that in a Twitter convo, and my name suggestion was Tate.

Surprised you know of TFTs!  Most don't, and I kinda have a complex about it (that tends to creep out at times). They really are pretty neat...even for little dogs. A lot of people over the years have told me they'd never have a little foo foo (sp?) dog. But even guys, after a while, have ended up changing their minds about my babies. Luckily, I semi-bonded with a TFT breeder a long time ago, so I know they are coming from a good home and responsible breeder. I got my first pup from her in 1988, and two more since then, including my current Danny Boy.  We don't see her or talk to her all that often, but when we do...we now call her "Danny Granny". smiley

He's approaching 7 now, and the black has a little gray mixed in, but his mom still thinks he's strikingly handsome!

They are super cool - we had  a couple of them come in to the clinic where I worked!
