Are sporting magazines becoming obsolete?
After seeing a poll about sporting news, I began to wonder are magazines in general and sports magazines in specific becoming obsolete?  I mean, in the time it's taken to print the magazine and get it to you through the mail, you've already heard/seen the information and stories in it a hundred times via the internet, tv sports stations and sports talk radio.  Just wondering what you think.

+3 thumbs upI would have to say they are because a few years ago I used to get three magazines and read them pretty much cover to cover.  Now, I get one, and I flip through it mostly.  I don't read it all because I've heard it all already.

I wouldn't say that they are obsolete, but they are definetely becoming less and less relevant. Why pay 30 bucks a month for a magazine subscription when you can get everything you need online for free, or just watch ESPN.

But if I am in some waiting room, I will definetely pick up a sports mag and pick out a few articles that interest me

Well said, both of you. Why buy a magazine an wait for it to come in the mail, when you can read literally the same exact stories online for free and/or cheap?

You can read the entire ESPN Magazine for about $7/month, as well as get access to all of the other Insider info. Why would you ever want to buy the magazine? Same with SI, Sporting News, etc... they all have websites, and all of the websites have damn near the same stories as the magazine.

I get a $15 subscription to ESPN magazine. I don't know how I got it but I've had it for 3 years now. Kinda cool.

+1 thumbs upYears ago I would buy Street & Smith's Magazine before baseball season, and really Sports Illustrated , Sport Magazine and Hockey Digest, and Ring magazine were enough. Then slowley there were more and more and it became a competetion. I don't really buy them anymore with the internet I can get all the info I need...I do miss the intimate stories the old magazines used to tell about different players each month.

As long as there are toilets, there will be a need for sports magazines. Oh yeah, and those magazines that have the great articles every guy likes to read.

Who needs Sports Illustrated when you have FanIQ?

(And don't say you need the swimsuit issue cause Dodge9 took care of that too!)

Yes they absolutely are!  Does not make any sense to buy any of those mags.  Half of the mag is all advertising and the other half is old news.  GREAT POLL!

Perhaps not so much obsolete, but maybe more irrelevant b/c of the points that have already been made.  I think this mostly pertains to sports mags, though.  Magazines like Maxim, r still worth it.  Though many articles r the same, they often have more pix than in the mag, as well as other silly articles the mag doesn't have.  And the mag still makes for great bathroom reading.
