+5 thumbs upGoing along the lines of what Dave said with the Simpsons, the same can be said of Law & Order.  They've spun off 3 shows, 2 of which have remained successful, and the original has been going strong since the Fall of 1990.

Law & Order are my favorite shows...I like Law & Order SVU the most...followed closely by Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

+4 thumbs upCheers ran for like 11+ years, countless emmys and spun off another show on the list "Fraiser".  It always make me laugh my TiVo grabs it every day from TV land.

Sam, Woody, Carla, Fraiser, Norm Cliff, Diane, Rebecca and the Coach all made for a great show.

Cheers gets my vote. Most of us that are of age have a favorite place to go have a drink and do a little socializing... that show captured that setting for all of us. As mentioned by running dog... the character development was amazing. The way the show "rolled with the punches" for over a decade and still remained hilarious. Woody was basically "son of coach"....yet Rebecca was the "anti" diane.

There's a bar here where I'm in school that looks EXACTLY like Cheers where the actual bar is inside.  I took this pic when I was there for a friend's 21st birthday, check this out!

+2 thumbs upThe Sopranos! It's the reason why cable stations now offer shows as part of their package. If Sopranos doesn't turn out to be a great show there would be no: Six Feet Under, The Wire, The Shield, Dexter, Deadwood, Weeds, Califorincation, L-Word, etc.

For me(and some of you may be to young to have watched in in original runs),  the show that is the best of television was:

                                             MASH

This show had a tremendous cast across many seasons.  The third season was the best in television.  For their last episode I held a MASH part with over 100 of my past and current students showing up in "MASH Gear" and ready to party.  But when the show started it was dead silent except for periods of crying, sniffing and out and out sobbing.

This show was a blend of outrageous comedy which included nudity, sex, sight gags and even attempts at racial humor that worked with a bold combination at nationalism, pride of work, true friendship and even love.  This was a "boffo" show that touched hearts and had us rolling on the floor laughing.

To me, the best blended cast show to ever have been on television!
