+2 thumbs upDavid Stern gets my vote too, who's trying to get NBA teams for China, then goes and craps on a city with a signifigant Asian population by letting a crooked ownership group move them to lord knows where?

+3 thumbs upAnd considering Pete Rose was dumb enough to bet ON the Reds when he was managing, I think that disqualifies him.

OK, who's disgraced themselves AND their sport:

Certainly Bonds & Tyson.     <<  OJ only disgraced himself; well, and the judicial system  >>

How about some others, going back a bit in time:

- The Chicago "Black Sox" (threw the 1919 World Series)

- Paul Hornung (was suspended for a year for gambling)

- Tim Donahey  (spell check his last name; gambling issue in NBA that may not be resolved for some time)

- Latrell Sprewell   (who can't 'feed their family' on $50+ million ??!!    Oh....and that choking the coach thing too)

- Marge Schott   (just for being Marge Schott !     <ex-owner of the Cincinnati Reds)

- Ben Johnson  (former 'fastest man in the world'; oops, I was doped up on 'roids when I did it.....)

- Carl Lewis (had to put his name here, just for how he 'sang' the National Anthem that 1 time !!!)

+2 thumbs upTo be fair to the 1919 White Sox, what no one remembers is that their owner made Scrooge look altruistic.

"To be fair ?"

Did the owner purposely throw the games ?     Did the owner give signals as to what pitch he was gonna throw ?    Did the owner purposely drop fly balls & ground balls ?

Let's face it, how many owners in the history of sports have paid all of their players what the players thought they were worth ?    (well....maybe just the Texas Rangers owner when he gave A-Rod $ 250 large !)

Sorry.....not buying the 'owner is a scrooge' excuse for throwing a World Series..............

+1 thumbs upNo, many remember why the players did what they did.  They hated their penny pinching jerk of a boss.  They felt they should get more than what they were getting.  They felt he reneged in some deals with them.  None of which justifies throwing the World Series.

If they didn't like working for Charlie Cominsky, they were free to go work on the farm, factory, hardware store or whatever else for a living.

+1 thumbs upThat's plenty of justification... it's not like now where you have arbitration and free agency.  If you can't run the ship right, you deserve to have the business tank.  Isn't survival of the fittest one of the first rules of capitalism?

+1 thumbs upThen the players deserved exactly what they got.  Banishment.

There is no law that says Joe Jackson, Chick Gandil, et al HAVE to play Major League Baseball for a living.  If they were unhappy with their boss or working conditions or paychecks, they were free to get another job.   Just like anyone else in an unhappy employment situation.
No one was telling them their loved ones would be killed if they walked away from baseball.

What you are saying is that it is also OK of a salesman to skim some money for himself on his sales, because he had some beef with the guy he was selling for.
Sorry.  Blatantly unethical.

PS.  Cominsky was running his business right, wasn't he?  He was doing fine.  He spent money where he thought it would be best served.  The team was not going bankrupt.  You said something about capitalism and survival of the fittest?

+2 thumbs upComiskey's team lost the series, and he deserved it for treating his players like garbage.

Your salesman comparison is also off base.  They never stole any money from the owner.  A more apt comparison would be a salesman tanking sales because the owner pays them a dollar a day.  No illegalities there.

+1 thumbs upWhy did HE deserve it?  His people put together a good team.  His players signed the contracts he presented them.  If they didn't like their deals, they were free get another job.

If you don't like your working conditions, are you going to tank it or just find another job?  If the players felt that screwed, they should have gotten another job.  Instead, they did something unethical that nearly destroyed an entire institution all because they felt they were being treated unfairly.

If no one wanted to play for him because he was a jerk, he would have gotten the message.
