Do You Believe Sporting Events Take Too Long? (Edited 05/22/08 11:32PM by )
I'm asking this due to the only rational argument those against Instant Replay can make.  Now they're trying to implement time-saving rules in baseball.  They've tried to cut down times in both NCAA and the NFL.  Does how long a sporting event take affect your viewing pleasure?

nope, if I pay $100 to see a game and $20 for a hotdog and drink, then I want to get my money's worth

the only sport that takes too long when watching on TV is baseball, but that's only because the time in between pitches takes so long

The way some people base their arguments against instant replay almost always say it'll make the game longer.  I don't see this as a problem.  As a matter of fact, I've never once heard any sport fan ever complain about how long a game takes.  Now I can understand how some people don't like the stoppage b/c of it ruining one team's momentum.  But I think that's part of the fun.  If u get the call, it's urs, if it goes against u, it swings the other way.

Now, baseball is a slow sport and can be hard to watch for the casual sport fan.  But that's b/c of how long it takes for the pitcher to set up, the batter to get ready, etc.  The game itself is slow, but if it takes long, so what?

NCAA decided to start the clock on all kickoffs, to help speed things up.  I disagree w/ this.  It should be (IMO) started when the ball is touched by the recieving team, unless it's gone beyond 10 yards like it always used to.  It gives the other team a chance, which to me is more fair, and helps to add more strategy to the game.

+1 thumbs upDepends on the sport.

For example, the final 2 minutes of a basketball game take 20 minutes!

mom: Can someone take the garbage out?

me or my dad: As soon as the Pitt game is over.

Mom: How much time is left?

me or dad: only a couple minutes

...10 minutes later, mom: I thought you said there was only a couple minutes left, that was 10 minutes ago!

if you love the sport and love watching the sport, you should be complaining, if at all, that they are not long enough because you could watch it hours upon hours or all day. if you dont like the sport, i dont want to hear people complaining because they (just an example) "don't like baseball and they didnt show oprah because of the game" or somethin

+1 thumbs upTV time-outs make being at an Illinois men's basketball game go by kinda slow, but it's still pretty cool. The quickest games seem to be the Cardinal's games I go to with Dave, we have such a blast and ALWAYS find something entertaining besides the game

On the flip side of that, these questionable calls in baseball usually end up in a coach arguing with an umpire, the coach asking another umpire's opinion, the umpires get together to discuss the play, the coach disagreeing with their conversation and getting thrown out of the game, and then we have to wait for him to pitch a temper tantrum before he finally leaves the dugout.  Instant replay won't slow the game down at all, IMO.

I agree with both of your examples.  Couldn't have said it better myself.  Leave the damn play clock alone in NCAAF games.  If you don't like how long a football game takes to end, go to the movies.  Because it sounds like you're not that interested in the game anyway.

I watch the games I enjoy.  If I think the game takes to long I probably don't like it that much anyway.

Well I never watch a sport that I don't care for, if I did I would have no right to bitch and moan about how it was too long,  or if was boring because of I don't understand the sport or why people like it. For me I can't imagine anyone sitting thru 9 innings of a baseball game, but hey, if you find it fun then all the more power to you. I'll go to Bristol and sit a few hours  watching one hell of a race anyday, but I would understand some ppl just aren't into it, and would think races are way too long, just as I would think sitting  thru a baseball game is about as much fun as watching paint dry.     So if you really like the sport, I don't think your gonna mind the length of time it's on.

soccer is probably the4 shortest televised sport there is.  football is probably the longest. (if we don't count nascar).  sporting events average about 2:45 would be my guess.  it would also depend on when i was watching wherther it was worth the time or not.

Keep in mind folks, sports and sport related events are no longer about the sport.  We are a money driven society, the folks who own the stadiums have a bottom line they have to meet, if they aren't they will negotiate with team owners to find discrete methods for keeping fans in the seats longer to get more sales in booze, or to get one or two more commercials played that will net them a few additional $$$$$s.  It is all about money folks, no matter how you cut it, if there is money to be made they will find a way to extend the game or whatever event to keep you in the seats or in the area longer.

To each his own.

I can only watch about 10 minutes tops of an NFL game before I get bored to tears.

See, this is what I'm going for.  I truly didn't think most sports fans cared how long a sport takes.  After 33 people 64% said "No" and only 9% said "Yes".  I don't know how the media is justifying this argument, or y they'd have any ulterior motive to.  If any, I would have thought all businesses would be for it, and it gives outlets like ESPN stories to talk about, ie "That was the wrong call" or "That changed the whole game"  blah blah blah.

no, sports do not take too long..

the time spent doing things other than sports, eating, drinking, sleeping and enjoying each other's company is what takes  too long..

work takes too long, traffic jams take too long and waiting in line takes too long.    sports and the fun stuff in life don't take up ENOUGH of our time.

No, I'm watching because I enjoy it.
#24 | 104 days ago

no, it is not sports that take too long..

it is all of the other things that we don't enjoy  (when we are not eating, drinking, being with people you enjoy and sports, etc.)  that take up too much of our lives.

work usually takes too long.   waiting in line takes too long.  traffic jams take too long..  test results take too long..   just as a few examples.

the good stuff in life does NOT take up too much time, it takes up too little.

No, I'm watching because I enjoy it.
