Do You Hear What I Hear?
I live across the street from a medical rehabilitation facility. In the mornings, they get all their deliveries and pickups, and there is a lot of activity (engines running, trucks backing up).  I have found that I can usually judge the time of day by the sounds.  That got me thinking of my fellow Q'ers.  What kinds of things do other people hear in their homes?  Do you live in an isolated spot that is pretty quiet or do you live in a heavily populated area with lots of noisy activity?

FanIQ Pts? No | Locker Room, Miscellaneous | Closes Never | Multiple Choice Opinion Poll
Question 1: What types of sounds do you hear near your house?
just birds, leaves rustling, water. Nature sounds
planes, trains, and automobiles
heavy machinery
voices, other people
Silence is golden
Beaneaters (the new other, right?)
combination of those above

Question 2: Do the sounds near your home ever bother you?
nah, I don't notice them anymore.
only when I'm really tired and trying to sleep
usually the sounds in my home (tv, radio) block the outside noises
YES!! I have to wear earplugs to concentrate
I haven't even listened before and now if I'm bothered, I'm cursing Terika
Rheda's a nice lady (which is another "other")

I grew up on a farm out of town and everything was quiet.  When I started college and moved into my apartment the first night a train came thru and I jumped 10 feet out of my bed. It took a while to get use to all the noise.  Now I'm back out of town and if I hear something unusual it scares me.  So far it has only turned out to be an animals.

The rehab center is only busy in the morning.  Makes me wonder what happens in there because sometimes they have 2 HUGE Iron Mountain paper shredding trucks parked at the curb....why do they have so many documents they wanna dispose of?!?  and they get a couple pickups a week of the biohazard containers.  At night I only hear cars driving by and stopping at the corner and sometimes the lady downstairs slams our front door shut.

Speaking of jumping 10 feet out of your bed- when I first moved into my apartment the damn refrigerator would scare the crap out of me.  I wish it would DIE so I could tell the landlord to replace it.  It is LOUD!!!

to live in Bklyn, NY and to hear crickets in my neighborhood its is astonishing. When relatives come over they are still amazed that the scenery reminds of them of the country instead of a concrete jungle,,,,, GO BROOKLYN GO BROOKLYN. But I still have to keep in mind they dont call it " CROOKLYN" for nothing

I live about a mile west of the airport.  Normally, they use the north/south runway, so the planes don't really bother me anymore.  But if they use the east/west runway, I'll be up all night (we have a UPS hub here that has planes taking off and landing every minute or two overnight).  I also have a neighbor upstairs who gets drunk every night and falls down or knocks things off of stuff.  I USED to have two neighbors, a mother and a son, who lived on either side of me.  They liked to get into fights in front of my condo at 3 AM.  Like punching fights.  They'd invariably knock each other into my door, my windows, my doorbell....they  finally both got evicted from their landlords.

..............oh geeze.......sorry, false alarm.  I pissed off my wife last night so she put on my headphones and set the channel to the Rush Limbaugh show.....

All is safe for now.....only.....I wonder about the residual effects of such direct input......  Answer me this, why do I have the sudden urge for coffee, an cannoli, and an Oxycontin right now.....damn, I can't get it outta my head....

Last night I heard a fight outside with lots of screeching and screaming. Every man in the neighborhood rushed out to see what was going on. The claws were out and there was hairpulling.

Unfortunately, it was just two cats.

Planes and more planes.......I live about 2 miles short of the North-South runway at PTI.  And the Air Force built a nice new refueling and maint. facility there.........Those C-5's coming and going 24/7 don't do anything quietly at all.

Kids during the day (live pretty much caddy-corner to a school) are drowned out by tv/radio.

Dogs at night are scared... drowned out... turned off by my pellett gun barking back.

It's very quiet where I live, so I rarely hear much, if any, noise from outside at all.  Oddly, though, when I DO hear even the slightest noise (like people chatting or a car alarm), I get so annoyed!    Never used to bother me when I lived elsewhere because I was so used to hearing these types of things all the time.  But now that it's a rare occurrence, it irks the hell out of me.

I live on a pretty quiet street and usually its just cars that make some noise. A lot of nights when I sit outside I can hear this owl who must be pretty close judging but how clear it is. Also when the mood hits them, foxes make a lot of noise too, its actually kinda spine chilling with the howling and crying noises they make. Inside the house its quite noisey for me, with all the pets  and aquarium pumps going. I actually have to wear ear plugs just to be able to sleep. Yet during the day I hardly notice any of them.

I grew up with the sound of trains sounding as if they were coming through the house. At the lake summer house hear the bands every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here at home silence is golden. Neighbors are far enough away the horses in the back yard can be seen not heard. The house is amazingly quiet and it is award winning NICE! Great poll thanks.

I live on a street where there is a bar half a mile down the road, so all of these "Jessie James" wanabees fly down the street at 9,000 RPM on their bikes at 1-2 in the morning.   Ok, i hope that was worth reading!

We get our fair share of everything.  I live in a subdivision that's right off the main go-between our two major highways, so we see a fair bit of traffic through here.  There's generally a fair bit of activity going on as we still have a large chunk of undeveloped land just across from us, so clearing and construction crews aren't out of the ordinary.  People here are proud of their lawns, so there's always landscaping equipment going off.  That actually helps me sleep better for some reason, unless it's in the neighbors yard, as my dog will go nuts, and that doesn't help me relax.

The suburbs are quiet. The only noise at night is the crickets and frogs and the occasional car driving by. We keep a fan going for white noise, but I still get freaked out when I hear a noise and I discover it's just my daughter making a late night trip to the bathroom.
