I feel that Sachin is the one who himself like to be very competitive on field. Right now he is as good as any body in Indian team. The moment he feels that his level is gone down he will step down himself. Therefore no one should worry about his retirement. It will come at appropriate time.

I agree when he is compared to the indian team, when compared to the earlier Sachin he is only 60%. what do you think
#84 | 70 days ago

He is not same as he was 10 years back for sure, but still he is one of the best technically. His role is different now. He can provide stability and carry the team through tough periods of hostile bowling.

I think he can be a source of inspiration in the team. His performance is not so.. bad as you say, taking into account the ODI between India Vs New Zealand (Compaq Series)
#88 | 70 days ago

There will not be any drastic changes like india performing extra ordinarily if he retires. But if he continues in the team its like an inspiration to young players .moreover the performance of sachin is not bad that he should retire........!!!!!!!!!!!!i dont think so.............

I think Sachin TENDULKAR is batting maestro. When he's on field there is an immese pleasure watching him play. Many a times it has been seen that the indian cricket team's confidence has been boosted by the "master blaster". Young players often consider Sachin Tendulkar as the ideal batsman.
Definately, the nightmare of bowlers,is definately a great batsman, because he is the favourite batsman of the all time favourite Sir.Don Bradman.
Which indeed signifies that this master has lot of spark left in him.......................

I donot think that Sachin should retire before the next world cup as he is going great guns. There is proverb, form is temporary but the class is permanent. After playing for so long with same e'lan, i feel he will himself call it quits when right time comes.

He is in a good form, this is not the appropriate time to take retire, he must be allowed to reach 50 centuries, and if he concerned about the awaiting youngsters to get a chance in the indian team, after his target of 50 centuries, he has to decide and must give the retirement.

its just that the role which sachin use to play in the team is different 4m the one he use to essay earlier......
earlier was jus like a one man army who had to think abt evrything...keeping up the momentum as well as scoring those big hundreds...he cunt rely on others to finish the job 4 the team.....n thats y we pple lost on world cup's n all coz 1 single person can never take u to the finals n win it 4 u also....its too tough a task....but still in many series he has done that like sharjah where he took the team to the finals first n then win the final also 4 them.......

but now situations has changed india has got players who can finish the game...thats y sachin dosnt hv to play double role of anchoring as well as hitting.....now he build up the innings with players like yuvi n yusuf n dhoni to finish the match 4 indai....example...australian series finals...campaq cup final..........

1 thing wich hasnt changed is he was, is n will remain the best cricketer world has ever produced n 1 thing eluded 4m his illustrious carrer is world cup...m sure he'll get the 2011 world cup 4 us n himself.........

It would be a disaster, if Sachin plays another world cup. Let the new and young blood stand up to the challenge and bring home the Cup! Sachin was a great player but not anymore as he's done with all the arsenal that he had.

Actors fade away when viewers do not pay to watch the movies, if movie is good, viewers decide the longevity of the actor, cricketer can survive with remaining in good books of  Big Boos, Sharad Powar, a politician even with bad performances, cricket is religion in India, fanatics and fundamentalists can always make the media camera run faster.!
Cricket is a team game, Sachin has failed but survived every time because he has fans who have other reasons to have him, his endorsements fuelled by his sports folio manager.
Big B is also a big endorser of brands, so media spins keep them in view.

not only his hundred's or 50's. even his presence adds a lot of value in the team...4 his teammates its a motivation boost....ny1 playing in that playing eleven has an extra belief that they wont loose....n not to mension....ofcourse it is a daunting task 4 the opposition team still to get him out.....it is an extra pressure on them.....

What is the point of making the same comment 14 times??? And this idea of Sachin Tendulkar being a good 'individual' player and not a 'team' player is ridiculous. I know that the scoreboard is an ass, but sometimes the facts cannnot be ignored. And the fact is Sachin scored 44 centuries in ODIs. India won 31 of those. The fact also says that while chasing in ODIs 23 times Sachin Tendulkar was not out at the crease when India won the match. When you consider the fact that all his life he has batted either as an opener or at 4 this is a tremendous feat. It is true that of his 42 test centuries India won only 16, while another 15 were draws. But while an Inzamam or a Ponting have a higher percentage in this regard remember this: till the success of Ganguly, Dravid and Laxman Sachin was very often India's only hope. On too many occasions in that period he has scored a century while wickets have fallen like nine pins around him. Was he to blame for the failiure of the rest of the team? No sir. Unfortunately in India hero worship is the norm and at the same time hero-bashing is a supposedly 'cool' statement. The current playing down of Sachin's utility is only a reflection of that attitude. This is very sad, indeed.

Arithra and Tanu, the point of the matter is where is Sachin as a team person, no where, when Rahul was being troubled by team mates like Bhajji, Saurav where was this senior man ? When Saurav and media man Boria was having fun at "Chappal" where was Sachin for the team.?  Where was Sachin when team was torn up as Yuvi and Bhajji had poke at Dhoni with Amit Mishra as spokesperson.?  True for persons , some,  who worship Sachin, he seems to be only hope, yet, they did not hesitate to take mock  funeral procession for all the players including that of Sachin when India lost the matches.!
It only sheds light that Sachin is mortal, who has to know that he is liabilty and is obstacle for the young ones who are getting lost in T-20 format, if not given opening, young players will develop no skills for the longer, good version of the game "test"

Dear Raja, I have never said Sachin is not mortal. Of course he is, and that why he sometimes fails. Secondly, you proved my point when you talked about 'mock funeral procession.' That is the problem. Sometimes Indian fans make the players immortal and at others the same fans put them on the funeral pyre. But do you really believe that differences in the team would have been resolved if Sachin had raised his voice? I do not think that is likely. Every person has his allegiances. For example, from your post it appears you are a supporter of Dravid and Chappel. But it is not necessary for everyone to make those allegiances public. I have heard this arguement about Sachin not involving himself with such matters for some time now. All I can say is thank God someone is concentrating on cricket and not team politics. Politics has long been the bane of Indian cricket. In the past Kapil supporters have accused Gavaskar of politics, Gavaskar supporters have blamed Kapil about the same. You say Ganguly was responsible for politics against Dravid. I know numerous Saurav supporters who claim it was Dravid's politics which lead to Ganguly's ouster. But the point here is not who did politics against whom. I believe instead of holding Sachin's studied silence on team politics against him you should ask other players to learn from him: don't play politics, play cricket. Finally, I believe the poll here refers to Sachin's utility as a player. His involvement with cricket politics is not the issue here.

Also dear sir, if you are suggesting that Sachin should move over simply to make way for the younger generation then you are giving these young players what they have not earned. Rhey have to prove thir worth first. They have to show that on current form and quality they deserve to be in the team instead of Sachin Tendulkar. Please don't forget that on occasions when Sachin has been rested, or injured, a lot of 'young players' have been given chances. Unfortunately none of them has been able to prove that. As far as 'developing' skills are concerned, that's what domestic cricket is for. Not International cricket. It is the platform to showcase those skills. Not learning them.

When a young player knows that he is only a spare for injured Sachin, the player will not be at his best. Young ones can improve skills at domestic tests, one day formats, but T20 is a game that is just slam bang thank u type, which is having no committment to the game as such. Please do think it over.

My dear friends who have commented on this poll, since all five fingers are not the same, similarly our views too would never be!

It is a situation like when a captain takes an odd chance and it works, he is called intelligent ;  but if that risk does not click, he is called inexperienced, irrational and sometimes even stupid or not fit to lead the team, etc. etc.

Every cricketer has a lean patch and we all know about it.  Your insisting that he should be done away with or should be persisted with till the world cup, etc. won't do one bit of good.  It is just that  you are called for by the creator of this poll to give your view, thats all!

If Sachin clicks, it will be good for those who are siding him - and if he doesn't, the other group will taunt this group that they had predicted his downfall, but no one was ready to pay attention to their views, etc. etc.

It is indeed a debatable question.  And we can all hope that :

1.  If he is persisted with, God give him the luck and the energy to give his best and click for the best of our country.

2.  If he is not selected, God give us a suitable replacement with his temperament, skills and unending quest for runs.

3.  If he wishes to play for the next world cup, I think that he should be given his due as he has given India his best and he aptly deserves to be allowed to fulfill his wish.  He should not be sent off on a sad note but be lauded and applauded for his contributions to this great game of cricket.  After all, he was and is still compared by many as a contemporary to the Great Don Bradman.

So if Australia, rather the whole world, can remember the Don even to this day, why not we give the same position to the greatest cricketer that India has produced.  Don't you think he has earned and also deserves this respect.

I feel, leave it on him to decide when he should retire and why too!

I am sure he is very intelligent and will retire on the note "WHY?" and not before people ask "Why Not?".

You did not read my comment fully. One, of course a young player may know that he is a spare for Sachin. But he still has to show that he is worth more on this day and time than the master, that he brings he brings more value to the team than Sachin Tendulkar. Do you think that Gautam Gambhir had it easy? No. But he proved his worth, and now he is an integrsl part of the team. No questions asked. He deserves his place because he earned it. And the others have to do the same. There can be and should be no freebies in International Cricket. I do agree T-20 does not teach much. In fact I believe it gives rise to bad habits. But are you seriously suggesting that since the ICC and BCCI are busy making money from the cash cow T-20 is developing into Sachin should be the one to pay the price. And again, you have nothing to say about Sachin's performance in the last 4 years. Do me a favour. Name 5 Indian batsmen who have a better record than him in this period.

I agree 100% but most people fail to realize that. To win a world cup and be the best team, we need team players and not just a player like Sachin! If only Sachin was required, where's the world cup in ODI 50 50 cricket, after 1983 cup. 1983 was a collective effort and not just one player. Champions know that.

First, I asked for 5 batsmen who have performed better than Sachin in the last 4 years. I am sure that despite your bias even you do not believe that Anil Kumble has a better batting record than Sachin in this, or any, period. Still, thanks for giving me the chance to settle the debate. Since the players concerned have played vastly different number of matches, I believe average is a better judge of performance. So let me give you the gist. In ODIs, in 2006 Sachin averaged 44.86, as against Sehwag's 26.43, Dravid's 35.35 and Dhoni's 41.05. Ganguly played no ODIs that year. In 2007 Sachin averaged 47.5, Sehwag 33.93, Dravid 37.41, Ganguly 44.29 and Dhoni 44.12. In 2008 Ganguly and Dravid were both out of the ODI team. Sachin averaged 41.82 that year, Sehwag 47.61 and Dhoni 58.4. In 2009 Sachin's average was 59.13, as against Sehwag's 57.5, Dravid's 36 and Dhoni's 77.5. On the basis of average ranking as per the average Sachin and Dhoni are the joint top performing batsmen for India, Ganguly is second (he, however played ODIs in only one of the 4 years), Sehwag 3rd and Dravid is 4th in ODIs. In Test Matches Sachin averaged 30.27 in 2006, Sehwag 39.55, Dravid 60.83, Ganguly 34.6 and Dhoni 29.32. In 2007 Sachin's average was 55.43, Sehwag's 22, Dravid's 35.65, Ganguly's 61.44 and Dhoni's 52. In 2008 Sachin averaged 48.32, as against Sehwag 56.23, Dravid 30.96, Ganguly 45.59 and Dhoni 35.17. Finally, in 2009, Sachin averaged 68.8, Sehwag 48.2, Dravid 62.8 and Dhoni 77.5. Ganguly, of course, had retired. For consistency in the rankings in average over these years Ganguly tops the list, Sachin is a close 2nd, Sehwag 3rd, while Dravid and Dhoni are joint 4th. Please note, I have compared the records of the batsmen you named between 2006 and 2009. Honestly, the best batsman for India in this period has been Gautam Gambhir. But, if the comparison above cannot convince doubters what Sachin means to the team even now, I really feel sorry for them. And I request you not to try and belittle the importance of these records. I could have said Dhoni's high averages in the last 2 years are a result of his batting lower down the order and consequently remaining not out on several occassions. But I want to acknowledge his performance, not drag down his importance. You should do the same for Sachin.

If I ask you for apples you cannot give me grapes either. Sachin is a batsman. His role in the team is of a batsman. Whether he should be in the team has to be decided by comparing him with batsmen, not bowlers. Why am I not surprised that you did not respond to all the comparative figures I have given? Probably because you very deliberately, and very conviniently chose to ignore points which show Sachin's importance in this team.

Sachin is important. But neither Sachin, nor any other player can win the World Cup alone. It has not happened. It will not happen. So its netter to stop worrying about Sachin and focuss on building the rest of the team.

Sweety, nobody's worried about Sachin, and i believe you didn't read the comment carefully. My focus has always been on being a team player. A group of players who play for the team and not just for themselves (whenever they like). I want the whole team to work together and bring the 2nd cup home. But with the current situation, nobody's sure. It might remain a fantasy. As i said earlier the selectors should set up their own R&D team to search for capable players and groom them further to be a part of the team. Motivate young bloods and experiment with them to uncover skilled players. They need to look for skilled players who can be team players as well and not just play their own scores. Sachin had his moments but when it comes to World Cup, he would be just occupying one players spot and our team would be one man short. I hope this doesn't happens.

Dear princess, please go through the comparative records of Indian batsmen I had provided earlier. What exactly makes you afraid he may be just occupying a place? Each scoreboard is a fool by itself. But a series of them shows track-record, form and capability. And that has nothing to suggest your fear is rational. Don't worry, he is still better than anything we have right now.

Sweety, i understand you are a big fan of Sachin hence lets not talk about rationality or fear. Track records are appreciated if they were made when the team won and not when the team lost because of lack of team play. I hope, you are right, if Sachin plays in the next WC. Princess dear, you should at least think about noting suggestions before you comment. I had requested you to go through the comparative records of Indian batsmen. Apparently you decided not to. So, of course, I should not expect that you have read an earlier piece of information I had provided here. It deals with the very point you raise - how many times the team won. It pains me to inform you that even that piece of factual information does not support you. In fact, I have the comparative data of recent performances even on that. And 'apparently' the only current Indian batsman whose success is linked more intrinsically to the team's success is Gautam Gambhir. Sehwag is also very close. The rest, miles behind. All I can say is this - forget his age, trust his recent, and I mean recent, records.

Dear prasad, I believe you are suggesting that Sachin should be more selective about the matches/ series he plays in. If so, you may have a point. He is now too precious to risk an injury versus a lowly team. But, of course, you cannot just chose to retire from International Cricket and come back at the time of World Cup and be as fluent. But, yes, I do agree that care should be taken to see that Sachin is fresh and fit at the time of the World Cup.

I agree with you. After all its a habit of 20 years of seeing the master at work. Almost since I became aware of my surroundings he was there enthralling all cricket lovers. But I just said this because I acknowledge that Sachin's body, unfortunately, is not getting younger. I, for one would not risk him against a team like Bangladesh. I believe that is the reason Sachin sometimes takes voluntary breaks from cricket. After all, there is no doubt about one thing. We do need that man for the 2011 World Cup.

Think of the long run. People are talking about Herculean score and what not. To begin with, just a reminder, Sachin Tendulkar is not INDIA. Don’t even think about it. And here’s a thought to ponder. Who won? India or Australia. End result, we LOST pathetically 4 - 2. Complacency leads to stagnation which eventually leads to failures, because people don’t dare to experiment and discover. We all have heard, desperate situations call for desperate measures. Discovering new talents and motivating them is what’s required, which isn't hapenning. I would like to see Sachin assist in coaching or grooming new talents and can even play ODI but not World cup. The result will be no different otherwise. But then, since people have become too complacent seeing one person shine at the cost of the whole team, it can’t be helped. Lets hope for the best.

Dear princess, you are rather going the way a certain Uncle R who used to be a regular on this topic once upon a time. Anyway, I believe you made the exact same comments a month or so back and was refuted by statistics. So rather than going that way I will take a new approach. Here's what the captain of the team M.S.Dhoni had to say about Sachin: "Critics needlessly go on talking about Sachin Tendulkar's retirement but the manner in which he keeps going about his business, I often joke that I might well retire before him! That's how good he is even after two decades... His quality knocks in the two finals against Australia (117 Not Out and 91) helped us win our only tri-series title in Australia (2008)... Again his his hundred in the final of the Compaq cup against Sri Lanka in September this year was a quality innings. And he sliced a piece of history for India, scoring a brilliant 103 Not Out in Chennai (against England in December 2008) as he guided us to the fourth highest run chase in Test history (387). His 175 at Hyderabad...He seemed to have pushed the clock back 10 years -- such was the quality of his strokeplay. Tendulkar continues to be a prolific run-getter...As a captain of the team, I hope that we win the 2011 World Cup for him. It will be a fitting tribute..." So, Princess dear, it turns out you stand alone with your view (with only Uncle R for support). Also, let me suggest to you that these guys (Dhoni, the selectors, the commentators) understand Cricket far better than a non-descript Mr. Aritra Gupta, or an equally non-descript Miss Shahin. (Don't mind, but both of us are in reality novices when it comes to Cricket. We are just fans. For those guys, that's what they do.) D: Finally, will it be right if you are blamed when all your colleagues mess up at work? So please don't blame Sachin Tendulkar for the failiure of the team. Want a reason for that? And yes, try to understand them as well.
