Has a home or apartment you lived in ever caught fire? (Edited 11/30/06 11:53AM by Seth)

My brother in law's familyhad their home burn down.  Nobody was hurt and thankfully they had good insurance but it's still probably one of the most difficult things to endure as far as lost memories and hassle factor.  Have a story to tell?

A neighbor's house caught on fire several years ago, just the mother and a four year old son at home...the child didn't make it.  It was very sad.  Always be sure you have smoke detectors and that they have working batteries.  Teach your children how to find the quickest exit in case of a fire.

someone threw a lit cigarette in the bushes near my house and they caught on fire, the power went out because it burned the power lines, and the fire burned a small portion of my house. The night before that we found 3 kittens that we took in (they were abandoned), so thank goodness we found them.

Two weeks ago a friend of mine named Michael that I graduated HS with had an electrical fire in his home. He, his wife, and his 4 year old son were in the master bedroom but his 16 month old daughter was in the other end of the house and the firefighters were not able to get her out.  It was terrible... both parent's had severe burns from trying to get to her bedroom.

My brother and I lit up my bedroom when I was about 9. Got the fire out before it destroyed more. We were a couple of pyros.

My ex husband  lit the pilot light on the gas heater and didn't close the fireproof door next to the light.  When the main door was shut and the heater clicked on all the insulation went up in flames.  We had gone to bed before the big fire started and I was dreaming that all my clothes smelled like smoke. Finally we both woke up and my husband was able to put the fire out. But we still had to sit outside naked in the car until the house aired out enough to go back in.

My very first memory as a human is a house fire when I was just three years of age.  I live in a duplex in Houston, Tx.  The fire actually took place in the apartment next door and that apartment was totally destroyed; our apartment was virtually destroyed by water and smoke damage.  The mother and son next door had burns over 50% of their bodies and my mom and I had burns over 20% of our bodies.  My arms, shoulders and scalp were burnt.  The 3rd degree burn scars are still very visable on my forearms.  A firefighter picked me up out of a closet that I was hiding in and threw me through a window out onto the porch or the two of us(3 and 5) would have quite possibly have died.  My dad was at a donut shop three blocks away watching the fire engines go by and remarking on the fact the fire must be close---then as he drove around the corner and saw the place enveloped in smoke and the fire trucks he told me later he went crazy trying to find us.  We'd already been sent to a local hospital.  It must have been something to see.  The recovery from the burn treatment is something I still vividly remember---it wasn't fun!!!!

well, it wasn't my house, but my car burned up... it was very traumatic. An electrical wire fell off the pole in the front of my sorority house and got stuck underneath the gas tank in my car and litterally blew the car up. It's now legendary at my college. I know it's no where near as bad as having your home burn down, but it's all I had at the time.

Ours are always from the oven: something being left in or on. Last week my sister left syrup on a burner while we were making Thanksgiving stuff. Fortunately it always ends well.

I LIT A CANDLE ON THE TOP OF MY TV BY USING A LONG PIECE OF PAPER TO REACH INTO THE CANDLE HOLDER. OBVIOUSLY THE FLAMING ASHES BECAME WICKS AND FLAMESWERE ABOUT 2 FEET HIGH IN A MATTER OFMINUTES.I POURED A CUP OF WATER SITTING BY THE CHAIR INTO THE CANDLE HOLDER.IF WATER VAPORIZES AT A HIGH ENOUGH TEMP,OBVIOUSLY IT WILL BURN AS A GAS.I NOW HAD FLAMES BOUNCING OFF MY CEILING,SO I GRABBED A TOWEL AND LIFTED THE HOLDER.IT IS NOT ONE PIECE,BUT 2.I LIFTEDTHE TOP ONE OFF WHICH CAUSED ALL THEMOLTEN WAX AND WATER TO POUR DOWN THE BACK OF MY T.V. ON THE UP SIDE,THE FLAMES FINALLY DIEDBUTSO DID MY T.V. I AM NO LONGER THE OWNER OF THAT TYPE CANDLE.
