If you owned A Sports Team and a New arena or stadium was built for your team what would you name it (Edited 06/14/08 11:33PM by Seth)
Example, The San Jose sharks play at H.P. Pavillion, but it will always be "the Shark tank" and if I owned the team I would officially name it that.

+1 thumbs upDepends.  It would be very tempting to take the money from the naming rights.
But I wouldn't just dish it out to anyone.  I would rather have the company name to be a local one with a local sounding name.

+2 thumbs upThe Murphatorium, because its all about feeding my billionaire ego.  To keep me humble, and judging by my fantasy baseball rosters, the naming rights would be sold to the makers of Ace Wraps and Advil. Maybe secondary rights to the Titanic builders too.

The George Halas Palace.

The Twinkie Center.  With United possibly going out of business and Twinkies were created in Chicago it could work.  Plus it would be a good metaphor for how the Bulls play, soft in the middle.

All of sport will be shocked if there is not corporate name attached to the thing.  And if there is not one in line when it opens, it WILL have one soon.  It's the nature of the beast these days.

Not that I don't understand the money and all, but I completely can't stand corporate names.  It doesn't necessarily have to do w/ one team or another, but something important to the venue or the local area.  How many people like the name Heinz Field?  Shoulda just called it the Ketchup Coliseum.  But Three Rivers Stadium?  That's awesome, and very applicable.

I agree in principle.  But the reality is somewhat different.

+1 thumbs upYep.  Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are just AWFUL names.  And who needs a stadium called Lambeau Field or Soldier Field?

I agree that corporate names are really bad most of the time.  Names like Minute Maid or Petco Park are just lame.  I don't think you should just call every stadium (insert team here) Field though.  That's just as bad.

Go with something regional or memorable for the fans.  Babe Ruth Field or Alamo Stadium.  Jackie Robinson Park.  There are tons of names that don't have to be just a city.  That's just as boring.  Pittsburgh should call their arena Mario Lemieux Arena, the Jagrdome, or just get ahead of the game and call it Sidney Crosby Stadium.  Pittsburgh Arena sounds sooo lame.  Like Municipal Stadium.

My choice of a name would be "Veterans Stadium/Arena" in honor of all my brothers and sisters serving in the U.S. Military across the globe. Stay strong!
