Independence Day - Let Freedom Ring!

With the 4th of July right around the corner, I wanted to re-post my FanIQ comment that got the highest number of thumbs (according to my profile).  It was in response to an Anti-American tirade from a poster living in Bolivia...

Putting politics aside, feel free to post a statement regarding why you are proud to be an American, a favorite patriotic quote, or a thank you to the servicemen and women that are serving - and have served - in the military to protect our freedoms.

...where at least I know I'm free,

and I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today,

cause there ain't no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA!

Happy 4th everyone!

+7 thumbs up I agree this doesn't even justify a response, but with Independence Day coming up, I had to reply...
  • The one problem with America being a "Bright Beacon of Freedom" for the world to see is that some envious countries have to lie to their own people so they don't revolt when that light shines on the crap in which they are living.
  • If America hadn't "stuck its nose in" or "played with fire" in a couple of World Wars, most of the world (including Bolivia) would probably be speaking German right now.
  • As for this notion of America being an evil nation that needs to "clean up its act."  Canada and Mexico have no fear of being invaded despite out military might.  Can you name one other "evil nation" whose bordering countries do not fear invasion or annihilation?
  • While some countries mock America's commitment to not leaving behind men on the field of battle (some going as far to shoot at our medics), we argue about whether OUR Constitution applies to enemy combatants.
  • Is America perfect...no.  However, it is the greatest experiment in Government that the world has ever seen.  Let Freedom Ring!
  • We tolerate your harsh words (that mask your jealousy) because free speech is something we all believe in.  I must warn you though...don't burn that bridge completely.  I promise you that a time will come when you, and the rest of the civilized world, will need America again...real soon.

Happy 4th of July everybody!  I'm gonna go to the McDonald's inside of my local Wal-Mart to eat my Big Mac!

+5 thumbs upI have a million that I love...but most have heard (from Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, George Washington, Patrick Henry, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, etc, etc etc....) but one of my favorite that is less known and from modern times:

"But let it not be said that we did nothing. Let not those who love the power of the welfare/warfare state label the dissenters of authoritarianism as unpatriotic or uncaring. Patriotism is more closely linked to dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security. Understanding the magnificent rewards of a free society makes us unbashful in its promotion, fully realizing that maximum wealth is created and the greatest chance for peace comes from a society respectful of individual liberty."
                      - Congressman Ron Paul (
before the U.S. House of Representatives, May 22, 2007)

but I do have to include one from old Ben:

"
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."  my favorite paraphrase of that: He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.

Great quote...but a minor correction: ..."and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

No President used the term "Democracy" until Woodrow Wilson (because technically, we are more of a Democratic-Republic than a Democracy.)

I've read some great ones, so I'm going to keep posting:
