Is Cole Hamels Heading Elswhere???
When Cole Hamels recieved his contract he refered toi it as a "low blow". He had a good season and he felt he deserved more than what they gave him. That didn't scare me too much. But, what does scare me is how the team is hitting behind him...or should I say how they AREN'T! it has to be frustrating when you play so well and have a stained record because of your team. It has to frustrate you when you give up one run over eight innings and LOSE the game! With him already playing for a team that he feels kicked him in the balls after a all-star season with a contract below his expectations, is the lack of run support the final straw? Will he pack his bags and go to the AL so he doesn't have to get pulled from great pitching performances?

What do you think?

If he doesn't work something out with the Phillies, where will he go?

+1 thumbs upI myself think he still wants to stay. BUT, I think that he'll pack his bags if there are any significant problem during negotiating his new contract.

He'll be in Philly at least one more season but after that it's a crap shoot.

The Phillies have his rights for at least the next 4 years, if not 5.  He was a rookie in 2006, and completed his first full season in 2007.  The only way Cole Hammels can leave the Phillies within the next few years is if they trade him.  If the Phillies do not trade him, then they either go to arbitration or sign him to a long term deal.

However, his reasons for leaving Philly should have NOTHING to do with lack of run support.  It is Baseball.  This shit happpens, has happened for years, and will continue to happen for years.  In 2005, when Clemens was with Houston he had an ERA of 1.87, let me say that again an ERA of 1.87 in 211.3 IP with 185 K's; yet he was 13-8.  The following year, Clemens had an ERA of 2.30 in 113 IP with 102 K's and a record of 7-8.

Yes it happens but that wont always stop a player from feeling some type of way about it!

Well, I hope Cole is mature enough to understand that the lack of run support throughout the year was nothing personal.  It is Baseball, this kind of shit happens.  It is not the first time a great pitcher recieved low run support, and it will not be the last time. I have learned over the years that the most important stats for a pitcher are ERA, K's, IP, and Walks.  The pitcher is able to control all of the latter stats (yes, a team can make a defensive blunder that prolongs an inning, or a ump make a bad call).  ERA represents how well he is able to keep his team in the game.  A higher IP shows (1) he is keeping his team in the game because if he was not, then most likely he would have been yanked from the game. (2) Also, by pitching more innings he helps out the bullpen, it is so important to keep the Bullpen fresh, and one way to do this is pitch longer in a game.  K's show a direct impact on getting outs himself.  Also,  if he is an effective strikeout pitcher, then he has the ability to get himself out of jams.  Finally, walks show his control of his command.  Obivously, the less walks allowed the less baserunners, thus a lower chance a team has to score.  Also, there is a high correlation between high IP and low walks.  When a pitcher does not walk people he is usally not getting deeper into counts, and avoids having to pitch to extra batters once a walk is issued.

Therefore, Cole should just worry about himself.  I'll leave you with this stat.  Last year, Adam Eaton had 10 wins, despite having the highest ERA among ALL NL starters.
