+7 thumbs upIt is difficult to compare players from a different generation. Sure Pele was the best player in his day but how would he play with the defenses of today? I guess that Christiano Ronaldo, for instance, would also have scored lots of goals if he had played in the 60s...

I'm not much of a soccer fan, outside of the World Cup. Go U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do know, that Ronaldinho, from Brazil, is the best I've ever seen. His ability to maneuver  around and away from defenders, is insane. He's not a goal scorer, so most people, would never even mention him, in this context, but from what I've seen, which admittedly, isn't really that much, he gets my vote.

Pele used to be the "only soccer player".  Now you can make cases for quite a few guys.  Pele was definitely a man amongst boys out there!

+1 thumbs upI agree, but I think of Pele and soccer in the same vein that I think of Michael Jordan and basketball...They were both on a different level than everyone else playing when in their prime.  They were both not just game-changers, but sport-changers...pushing forward the evolution of their respective sports.  Everybody playing with or against them was just playing catch-up.

+2 thumbs up

I'm going to use one of those "If...Then...." arguments to make my "Yes" answers:

IF you take Pele's passion for soccer and his innate skills for the game and THEN you bring him to today's game with all the training and conditioning he'd still be the best in the game.

Yes, there are great players today---but if you update Pele to today's game he'd be a monster!  He was a tactician of the game, he just didn't run around and score.  Plus, he was such an ambassador for the game which I know doesn't apply to the question here but come on.....

That can be said of just about every sport, but we still compare generations.  I say yes, but you could make arguments for others like Ronaldo, Carlos Valderrma, and Roberto Baggio.

Every decade there is that one player who makes the difference.

1. Di Stefano

2. Pele

3. Cruijff

4. Platini

5. Maradona

After that there where many great players but i.m.o. not as great as these 5.

I prefer Johan Cruyff...a great technical ability, speed and vision of play; he was a great player/coach and i don't think Pele had the same ability to extract the most from others.
