Is it good for the Aaron Rodgers era to start on Monday Night on the big stage? (Edited 04/12/08 05:09PM by Seth)
Suddenly the beginning of the AAron Rodgers era has gotten complicated. I was hoping for a nice noon start vs a non-playoff team and no favre number retirement. Now it is confirmed that on opening weekend Aaron Rodgers and the Packers will host bitter division rival Vikings on Monday Night in 1st game of a national double header. I am sure networks and the NFL all would love a big ole favre fest to say good bye. I for one hope it doesn't happen.. that night anyway. Rodgers has enough pressure as it is in a key division game. What are yout thoughts?

+1 thumbs upI just hope Packers don't bow to networks and league office and make it the game favre's # gets retired. Do that later. This is a big game now on several fronts. Packers/Cowboys at lambeau, perhaps on a Sunday or Monday night... would be the perfect game to do that. heck...in his entire career....Cowboys only played at Lambeau 2 times.

the viking game is perfect because its one last shot at the vikings and one more time they have to deal with Brett.

I predicted it would be the first home game, this situation is perfect.

I think this is a great way to start off the Rodgers era. Lambeau Field. Monday Night Vs. one of your biggest rivals. Deffinatly should honor Brett I do not see why it would matter too much if they did or didn't though. I would like to see how things go before the game to decide who will win because no one knows what will go down before then.

Why should they retire Brett Favre's number?  Yeah, I know he has set records and done a lot of years with the same team, but I don't think a number should be retired.

+1 thumbs upFor #2, I needed another choice...I say don't retire Favre's number this year, although it is an honor he clearly deserves.    I say give it some time and let the rumors of his possible return die so that he can be honored in a way befitting a quarterback of his caliber.

As long as you think that of every player on every team, I suppose I have no argument against that.

Actually I do.  Unless of course the player did something extraordinary and later met a tragic and early end, ala Pistol Pete.

I disagree, but don't have any real argument against that.  Its all personal opinion.

Vikings more than likely take the opener, capitalizing on Rodgers inexperience and Peterson's ridiculous running ability.

But if you saw the last part of last season people were starting to really get to know how Peterson runs and he started not getting all the yards he had in the earlier part of the season and with the Packers seeing him twice last seaon they know what to do to stop him

he ran real well against the Pack the last time they met when they shut them out and not having Favre this time isnt going to hurt the defense much.

+1 thumbs upI just hope you Packer fans realize Rodgers isnt Favre. No matter what he does he will be compared to Farve. Look its happened in Buffalo, Dallas, Denver, and Miami. You need to let Rodgers be Rodgers. He does have a strong arm, but he will struggle this season its gonna be his first year asa starter. Be patient! Plus they should retire Favre's jersey against the Cowboys

they should retire it on oct 5th, thats when the packers play atlanta in green bay. thats the team brett played for as  a rookie in 1991.

i think they should retire brett favre's jersey on oct 5th. that when they play the falcons at green bay. he started in atlanta in 1991. it would be ironic

hmmm...peterson ran real well in a 34-0 blow out loss? That means diddly squat. He obviously didn't run well enough to even help his team get in FG range! Peterson is AWESOME, no doubt... but aside from him...Vikes have little weapons on offense. Vikes will try to win an ugly game by stopping run, throwing the kitchen sink at Rogers... and hope peterson breaks off big runs. I think America will see that Packers certainly are a lot more than just brett. I think the 08 Packers are most talented team since 97. I think Rogers will work the quick 3 step drop passes to offset Vikings pass rush. Try to exploit mismatches (LB on TE, small CB on Jones). I think Rogers will play within himself and scramble out of pressure and lead pack to a second half win. What allowed packers to sweep Vikes last season was quick slants and checking into one on one covered receivers... If Rogers is patient, packers will win. Top to bottom, Packers are the more talented team... but in d-line and running game...Vikes are at the top of the league. Intersting battle between 2 very dis-similar teams.

I've been a Packer fan since 1973. I think the older packer fans ( over 35) are "over" favre's exit and are excited about the new kid. I think the younger packer fans ( who have ONLY known Packers when brett was QB) are the ones crying and talking this BS about a comeback. I am very happy with the state of the team at brett's exit. Whereas many teams "mortgaged the farm" in their franchise QB's final seasons ( 49ers w Young...Cowboys with Aikman... Bills with kelly...etc) and then paid for it when their QB retired and had rosters of aging declining vets and terrible salary cap problems and prolonged losing seasons afterward... Packers have $35 mil in cap space... youngest roster in NFL... and a rising young defense... and a roster of star players ( Woodson, Barnett, Kampman,Driver, jennings)... I credit ted thompson for preparing the team for life without favre. If young off line continues to improve...Grant continue his maturity... and defense play to expectations... I think it is total BS to remove Packers from "Super Bowl contender" status. heck, Rogers has 3 years in this league. Best possible scenario for Post-Brett Packers. And, if you are going to replace a legend... Coach mac and GM Ted have done everything possible to make for a smooth transition. Only thing that derails Rogers is an injury... and if that happens...it happens...
