+7 thumbs upI disagree. It's more than a number, it's a legacy. When you see a #80 Niners jersey, you think of Jerry Rice. THE GREATEST EVER. Not Isaac Bruce, not some spare receiver or tight end, JERRY RICE. The franchise is showing him disrespect simply by allowing anyone else to wear the number. Nobody else should wear #80 again. Period.

+1 thumbs upThis is ridiculous. The franchise should keep ANYONE except Jerry Rice Jr. from wearing #80 EVER again. Bruce should show some respect for the greatest receiver to ever play and wear a different number!
Yes. No way should #80 ever be worn in SF again!

+3 thumbs upIt's up to the Franchise to retire a jersey...... The Cowboys have never retired a players jersey at all.. I know it sounds funny but maybe Bruce wants to wear the jersey to honor Jerry Rice, has anyone ever though of that??? Does anyone know what Rice thinks??? Is Bruce great friends with Rice and did he get his approval to wear the jersey in the first place??? I believe these are all valid questions.....
No. If a players jersey is not retired it's fair game.

+2 thumbs upLetting anyone wear that jersey is ludicrous and an insult to the greatest offensive player to ever grace the gridiron.

+1 thumbs upIf the Niners haven't retired it yet and Rice is down with it, why not?  Its up to the Niners to retire it.  That said, if some kid wanted Favre's #4 before we retired it, I'd say hell no... so I'm kinda talking out both sides of my mouth.

+3 thumbs upExactly. It would be like Brad Johnson signing with the Packers next year and wearing number 4.

+1 thumbs upRice has allowed him to do it, so I suppose it's alright.  It'll seem really weird seeing #80 on the field for SF, and it won't be Rice.

+3 thumbs upThe reason he wants to is probably just the fact he's worn #80 his whole career.  Granted, he hasn't had the career of Rice, but the argument could be made that Bruce should find his way to Canton.

+5 thumbs upJerry Rice said he's cool with it...especially since he was allowed to wear a RETIRED number while he was playing for the Seahawks.

Why the 49ers haven't retired #80 is beyond me...but it's not retired, so it doesn't matter...and even if it gets retired, Rice said it's cool...so it's cool.  Not to mention, if Rice wanted anyone to wear his number, who's a more stand-up guy than The Bruce?

So that means they need to retire it......

Good point, I forgot about the fact that Rice went to Seattle and wore Legent's RETIRED jersey....(with his approval of course)

Some teams wait until the player reaches the Hall of Fame until retiring their number.  I know the Packers do this, so maybe the Niners do?
