its funny...I , too liked Red Dawn. I watched it on AMC a couple weeks ago and saw it was given a 1* (star) rating. Of course it wasn't plausable...Reagan would not have allowed an invasion...but just a good kick a$$ "America Wins" theme. Interesting how during Reagan's era... many "pro america" war movies designed for young people... and coincidently...Reagan's high approval rating

I think First Blood Qualifies....Johnny Rambo kicked an entire national Guard unit's arse! I think First Blood is actually a very good movie. Like the 1st Rocky... told a great story. At the end...when Troutman was walking Rambo out and you see the entire town in flames... awesome...totally awesome.... awwwwrrriiiggghhttt Hamilton!

Platoon is my favorite. I saw it at the theater when it first came out while on Spring Break in Biloxi, MS. I was in high school. I went with friends to a theater in Gulfport to see it. There were about 5-6 rows in front "roped off" so I sat in 1st row behind that area. Minutes later a large number of vets from the VA Hospital came in and sat in front of me in the roped off areas. There were several in wheelchairs, several had missing limbs. There were tears from the guys directly in front of me from the very beginning of the movie when Sheen got off the plane. For the next 2 hours I got a unique theater experience. In many movies, when people in front of you talk, it pi$$es you off...not that day. Listening to the whispered conversations and watching the movie and hearing the soft crying was an experience I will never forget. I have quoted the "Barnes vs Elias" battles for the last 20 years!

1. first i have to go with this war movie between the "empire" and the "rebel alliance" with many troops, space ships, and futuristic (even though it wsa long time ago in a galaxy far far away)samurai called "Jedi".

2. any POW movie with Chuck Norris

3. any movie with Klingons fighting the federation of planets "kish lhok koomplah!"

i would have added:

Gallipoli (WWI), The Big Red One (WWII), All Quiet on the Western Front (WWI), Ran (Jidaigeki), Excalibur (King Arthur), Willow (fantasy), but it was a fun poll

I did like Full Metal Jacket a lot....

from Private Pyle's latrine blow up.... to the "me so horny, love you long time....

"How can you shoot women and children?"

"You just don't lead them as much"

lots of good lines in this one

A very good friend of mine said it reminded him very much of his army days too.  He said he saw character types in that movie who were also in his unit.  That doesn't make it a good  movie.
The movie was poorly put together.  The characters were all very weak.  There was no cause for the viewer to care about any of them in any way.  Good or bad or in between.  (I actually found myself hoping they would ALL get shot so the audience would be put out of their misery)  The acting was atrocious.   Oliver Stone doesn't exactly have a stellar track record as a directer.

+1 thumbs uphmmm...again...your opinions. I thought dafoe and berenger did a nice job. The ratings and critical acclaim suggests most people are not in agreement with you

Of course they are opinions.  When discussing movies it is ALL about opinions.  So much so that I think it really goes without saying.

For some reason, the media likes to stroke Oliver Stone.  I do not know why.  (perhaps because they share political views?) He was actually slightly better as a writer than as a director.

Critical acclaim does not mean "most people".  Nor do ratings.  If you want to know what "most people" liked in 1986, the best way is to go by box office.  Top Gun made far and away more money than Platoon did.  (and it sucked too, BTW...)

must have stunk for you taking ladies to movies, as you think most of them stink. In the mind of a 17 year old... neither Platoon or Top Gun stunk. And I am a thespian with a background of everything from Shakespeare to doing TV commercials...the mere fact Platoon is till on every month...shows that a number of people must have liked it

You know, TV movies from 1988 are still on all the time too.  There are so many channels and stations out there repeating so much it is hard for old movies to NOT be on TV a lot.  USA and TBS show pretty much every movie ever made between the two of them.

Many liked it.  Many did not.

Most movies DO stink.  That doesn't mean there are not a good number that don't.  Besides, when I took ladies to movies in those days, what movie we went to didn't matter a whole lot.
