Joe Torre and Manny Ramirez Should Work Out Just Fine
![]() The Manny Ramirez deal that was declared "dead" as the trade deadline approached and expired. Sometimes that's just a sign those "sources" stopped calling the experts and started getting the deal done. After a great deal of complaining, Manny Ramirez has gotten his wish. The Boston Red Sox left fielder is headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Boston, who also got their wish in getting rid of all the Manny baggage, get the Pittsburgh Pirates' Jason Bay in return. Bay, 29, struggled last season with a .247 average, but has regained his form and power, already surpassing last year's 21 home runs with 22 and currently batting .282. As for the Pirates, well, they get Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Brandon Moss and reliever Craig Hansen from the Red Sox. In other words: prospects. Might as well change the name of the club to the Pittsburgh Prospects. Bravo to Boston for stepping up in the final hours to pull off a move that needed to get done, sooner rather than later. And it's not like the Red Sox are going to struggle without Manny. David Pinto's excellent hypothetical column from yesterday is not a must read. Boston seemed to unload Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez at the right time. The Dodgers definitely get a talented bat, but what type of attitude arrives in Los Angeles? I bet Joe Torre is just as curious as we are. He couldn't have been thrilled with this trade, but as we know from his time in New York, he excels at managing egos. Who made out the best? Going to be a great final two months, that we can be sure.
