Manny Ramirez Traded To Los Angeles Dodgers, Jason Bay To Boston Red Sox; Loose Change To Pittsburgh

Joe Torre and Manny Ramirez Should Work Out Just Fine

Manny Ramirez Traded To Los Angeles Dodgers, Jason Bay To Boston Red Sox; Loose Change To Pittsburgh Photo

The Manny Ramirez deal that was declared "dead" as the trade deadline approached and expired. Sometimes that's just a sign those "sources" stopped calling the experts and started getting the deal done.

After a great deal of complaining, Manny Ramirez has gotten his wish. The Boston Red Sox left fielder is headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Boston, who also got their wish in getting rid of all the Manny baggage, get the Pittsburgh Pirates' Jason Bay in return.

Bay, 29, struggled last season with a .247 average, but has regained his form and power, already surpassing last year's 21 home runs with 22 and currently batting .282.

As for the Pirates, well, they get Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Brandon Moss and reliever Craig Hansen from the Red Sox. In other words: prospects. Might as well change the name of the club to the Pittsburgh Prospects.

Bravo to Boston for stepping up in the final hours to pull off a move that needed to get done, sooner rather than later. And it's not like the Red Sox are going to struggle without Manny. David Pinto's excellent hypothetical column from yesterday is not a must read. Boston seemed to unload Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez at the right time.

The Dodgers definitely get a talented bat, but what type of attitude arrives in Los Angeles? I bet Joe Torre is just as curious as we are. He couldn't have been thrilled with this trade, but as we know from his time in New York, he excels at managing egos.

Who made out the best? Going to be a great final two months, that we can be sure.

+6 thumbs upThe Dodgers were the biggest winner in this trade.  The Dodgers have the best ERA in the NL, but their offense is horrible.  Adding Manny should allow the Dodgers to beat out the D'Backs.  The Pirates added good prospects.  The losers are the Red Sox.  Manny Ramirez > Jason Bay.  Also, the Red Sox gave up a good prospect in Brandon Moss and former 1st round pick Craig Hansen.

+2 thumbs upI think this makes Boston better overall.  A happy clubhouse is a good clubhouse.  & it's not like they got a scrub to replace him.  Watch Jason Bay's RBI #'s skyrocket in flight....into the Boston night....that's right.....the Red Sox will fight.....that's all I got

other than the L.A. Dodgers, the yankees made off the best in this trade.  the two-headed monster that was the redsox (ortiz and ramirez) is now a monster you can pitch around.  say hello to the barry bonds treatment.  looks like the yankees will win the wild card, maybe still the division.

+1 thumbs upThe Sox gave up the most bodies but Manny wasn't going to work in Boston anymore. He wouldn't play and he wanted out. Same thing happened with Nomar (and look what happened to him). Hansen just doesn't have the head to be a major league pitcher. Moss is a decent prospect but the Sox have no room for him in the outfield (Ellsbury, Moss and Bay are going to be here for a while). I would have prefered trading him for a relief pitcher but if he needed to be throw in to get Manny out of here good.

The Sox downgraded a little on the field but upgraded BIG TIME in the clubhouse, no one here wanted to here his shitick anymore.

Well this shouldn't come as a surprise. I'm thinking when Manny said "The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me" that just blew their tops. As Manny takes his act to L.A. you can't help but think that the Red Sox must feel a heavy weight being lifted off their shoulders despite losing a good player and really who can blame them?

Manny's act isn't excatly what you want to see day after day after day.

The Sox had to get value for Manny now rather than not pick up his option and have him walk in the off-season.  Scott Boras has helped Manny decide he doesn't like it here because Boras doesn't get paid until Manny's NEXT contract.  I'm thrilled to see what Jason Bay does with protection in the lineup.  If he can produce like he did in Pittsburgh, just imagine what he could do seeing better pitches in a lineup with Papi, Drew, Lowell, and so on.  You're never going to replace an offensive powerhouse like Ramirez, but Bay's upgraded defense has to save a run or two better than Manny in the long term.

...and don't believe the hype.  Craig Hansen's a bust, as his new team will soon find out.

+1 thumbs upI'm not sure Manny is going to add that much to the Dodgers... it is more like one wam body for another for another - a new face in the clubhouse - something different - everyone kinda came out equal in this one IMHO...

+1 thumbs upTorre couldn't be thrilled, ya right. The right time to trade Manny, maybe, but not because of declining skills. Bay vs. Manny, you're kidding, right. There's no doubt the Sox took a hit on this one and LA made a HUGE upgrade. Torre has got to be happy as the proverbial pig in s*** right now. This is one of the best managers of our time, like he's concerned about not getting the most out of Manny. Manny is one of the greatest hitters of our time, and he's in a contract year. Don't think there's much to worry about here. As for Bay, congratulations on the escape from Pittsburgh. It's a real shame to see great talent rot away as he has been doing with the Pirates. But make no mistake, he(nor do I think anyone) can replace Manny. Bottom line, LA improved, BoSox took a step back(minor as it may be), and the Pirates got some decent talent to trade away in the next few tears.

Even though i don't care for Manny or the Dodgers, that adds a huge powerful stick in their lineup.
